The most reliable way to do it is to hardcode it in each of your themes. There's code out there:
http://wpmudev.org/project/wpmu-blog-defaults

That lets you create default widgets, but if you want people to be required to keep them there, then it's best to hardcode them in the theme.

I am seeking someone very familiar with wordpress. ** Please include your top 3 most relevant website links. to this project.

I need you to advise on what is smartest way to doing this without having to redo the exisiting site

Basically for this project, there is an existing website

http://www.asiangayfilms.com/

The objective of this project is to

1. Allow a user generated content element where users can enter their own reviews

2. Preference is to retain the wordpress setup (can maybe update the version)

3. Improve the UI for easy search and navigation + remove revolution template references

4, Install plugin to prevent forum spam (This should be an integrated login)

5. A directory script

6. An ad banner module . Can use google ad manager or something.

Thanks
I looking for someone very familiar with wordpress and have demonstrated experience on what is available. And can even advise us what is the simpliest way to hack up this solution with minimal time. I am find with template layout to reduce customization work. But i would like some proposals that i can visualize the outcome and the associated cost.

http://mu.wordpress.org/

I looking for someone very familiar with wordpress and have demonstrated experience on what is available. And can even advise us what is the simpliest way to hack up this solution with minimal time. I am find with template layout to reduce customization work.

The priorities are as follows :

1. Ability to *add on or improve on the existing website while avoiding an entire revamp of the website. ideally there shouldnt be a need to migrate existing content

2. Priority to allow users to add in new reviews and we just approve.

3. For Ad module i would prefer Google Ad Manager instead

4. For directory script show me what you think is best, let me know how it would look like and how much i have to pay for it. You dont need to customized it from scratch sometimes it doesnt make sense. These are old problems that many have solve and are selling solution that are cost effective and good.

5. Login have all to be integrated.

You can also let me know what features are good to add in, and let me know the costing.

I am familiar with the industry now and i looking at a simple solution that makes sense both for the vendor and us.

But i would like some proposals on how it would actually be what functions and how it would be executed that i can visualize the outcome and the associated cost.

Debian/Ubuntu debian-installer ate my hard drive. I won't use it again, for anything, anytime soon.

All my servers have been Red Hat or Fedora based for years, and even aside from Debian's unfixed critical data loss bugs, Debian/Ubuntu has failed to impress me as a server platform.

CentOS (based on RHEL) already has high availability features built in which you can start using right away.

I also switched to nginx from apache on my main site (which uses WordPress, not MU) some time ago and I'm highly impressed. Apache has turned into a bloated nightmare, stripping it down is a royal pain, and it's also a bit too crashy. The only real issue you'll run into is that nginx uses a different format for its rewrite rules, so you'll have to port those. This example should help.

We currently have a blog called http://www.sikika.co.ke. There are some of the issues we need to addressed with the template we are using. Is there any freelancer who will be willing to help me urgently.

1. Thumbnails of pictures and videos should appear on the home page. Clicking on videos should take users to the video on the blog that has it.

2. Short news should be recently updated blogs, and we should do away with the recently updated blogs section. The short news layout should remain and it should update automatically with the most recent appearing at the top left, the second most recent at the top right, etc. Pics should also appear.

3. We need a ‘More’ link at the bottom of the sections in the left hand side bar.

4. There are too many categories at the top of the homepage. We’d like to have an automated system of displaying the posts. Is it possible to just choose categories and have every new post in that category appearing?

5. The box with ‘Enter your email address’ does not say what it’s for.

6. There is something wrong with the placement of the ad at the top of the page.

7. There’s something wrong with the main story at the top of the home page. Read more doesn’t fit in the space.

We’d like you to document whatever you do so that we can learn. Also, please free to share your thoughts on what else we can do to improve our blog.

I'm currently using godaddy with a deluxe account. It looks like I will need to spend another $25 a year for dedicated ip to get Wordpress MU to work for me.

What I'm trying to do...

I have 4-5 domain names / potential websites that will be blog based. I would like them to all appear to be on their own server to the user and what I mean by this specifically is http://www.blogsite1.com/index.php, http://www.blogsite2.com/index.php, etc. Is my only option for wordpress mu with a godaddy setup to have multiple blogs be subdomains such as blogsite1.mainblog.com/index.php? Folders are an option for other hosts? http://www.mainblog.com/blogsite2/index.php?

I currently have multiple domains hosted on godaddy and those sites are folders within my main hosting account... how is all of this going to work with wordpress MU?

Some of my websites will have similar content. I'm also looking for a way to post a blog update to site 1 and to site 2 if the article happens to relate to both of the sites. Can I do this from one main blog posting interface, distribute a post to multiple blogs?

Another situation I'm interested in doing is taking a blog post from a user created blog at say usersblog.blogsite1.com and promote the blog post to the main blog if I feel the post to be ..."worthy." Is there a way to do this in the interface without copying and pasting the text?

I would like all of my blogs and forums associated with the blogs to share the same user table but as far as I can tell I can accomplish this without MU.

Any advice or guidance would be extremely appreciated.

viniciusandre: you can set the memory limit available for WordPress in the wp-config.php file. It'll override the PHP memory limit when running WordPress.

Do this with:

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '128M');

I don't think that readme has changed for quite a while - so the fact that you've been getting away with only 24MB is probably down more to good luck rather than anything else.

I reported performance problems with only 32MB of memory allocated about 2 years ago.

tdjcbe, I'm not root of the server. I can't change
php.ini
or create a working
.htaccess
setting memory limit. I'm considering about using WP Supercache.

SteveAtty, I'm sure that would "fix" the problem, but the difference from 2.7.1 to 2.8.4 looks quite big to me. I never had any problem with WPMU on about 2 years using 24MB on PHP memory options.

I've got my php memory set to something like 128MB and things run a lot faster.

Also if you read the README:

2. If your PHP is compiled with memory limit checks, the default is 8MB
which is much too small. You should increase this to at least 32MB or 64MB
to avoid PHP out of memory errors. Look for "memory_limit" in your php.ini
file.

The server had a 24MB memory limit on php.ini.

Why not bump it up to a higher number, say 32megs?

I'm sure you've thought of that and I'm not suggesting it to be rude but at the very least, it's a work around to get the site upgraded and running.

And make sure that you have some form of caching in place.

I reproduced this problem.

It was impossible to run Wordpress MU 2.8.4 and 2.8.5 due to memory usage. PHP keeps giving the "failed to allocate" error all the time and doesn't load any outsourced script (like plugins or custom functions), and halfly loaded some pages.

Well, I had to downgrade to 2.7.1 quickly, the website couldn't be
offline
, and I'm sorry that I can't test it throught top or any other Unix command.

The server had a 24MB memory limit on php.ini.

Hai,
When i upgrade,i was always having following:
Warning! Problem upgrading . Your server may not be able to connect to blogs running on it.
Error message: malformed

So what i did is always skip the blog url that have problem.I just modify the url.Just retype proceed forward number at the xxxx. This is what i did so can continue upgrade all the blogs with out waste time.
wp-admin/wpmu-upgrade-site.php?action=upgrade&n=XXXX

So,it was very time consuming actually which i have more than 3000 blogs. It will be nice if can able to skip and generate report later about which blog was having error during upgrade
