It's quite possibly a plugin conflict.

Also, did you go to Site Admin -> Themes and enable them so they'd show up under the user's Appearance menu?

I've just upgraded to WPMU 2.8.6 on my test server. Everything seems to be working except when I try to preview a theme (in the "appearance" section) I only see the image of the current theme in the preview window. Interestingly enough, the "Activate" link lists the real name of the theme I requested a preview of.

This is not a case of the theme name. And, yes, all the themes are at the root level of the theme folder /wp-content/theme/

Any words of advice? I'm scratching my head.

Thanks for any thoughts,

I need someone to explain to me the difference between a buddypress theme and a wordpress MU theme.

I am creating a professional looking site, that I would like to link and/or incorporate features of buddypress community. That being said do I install and activate a wordpress theme (such as Ines that is set up to have buddypress widgets) and still bring over the default buddypress theme and activate that as well? Then how do they link together? I guess what I am asking are these two different entities. I also need to have the ability to customize a little -- without knowing any PHP coding.

I would greatly appreciate someones assistance.

Thanks andrea! That's good to know for the future. I'm still finding my way around this.

DeannaS, if you're still around...I switched to wpcal. GREAT idea. It's a fabulous plugin and very easy for the end user.

I do have a major important quotes on it though. I moved it over to the Plugins forum to stay on track though. If you could look, that'd be great. I mean if anyone could help me figure it out I'd pay. Short on time, sigh.

Thanks!!

"When you say change the name in the style.css file as well, do you mean the commented area "Theme Name: " inside the CSS file? Can you give me an example? "

Yep, that's exactly what I mean, or it won't find the copy you're working on.

Theme Name: Thesis2

or even ThesisEvents. Doesn't matter, just something to distinguish it from the previous copy.

I haven't delved into thesis hooks much. @kristarella may be able to help on twitter.

Thanks Deanna and Andrea.

I came across that calendar plugin, but haven't tried it. I will definitely do so; I think I've made some progress, so I want to see if I can make it work this way first though.

I am reading about it and may very well end up with wpcal.

In the meantime, at like 2 a.m. last night I made a change to get the custom fields to display like an event listing. It shows up fine in Firefox and Chrome: http://elp.metalcast.net/events/

That "ul" which contains the event details are custom fields.

Now, this may not be the greatest way. If it's horrible please smack me aside the head, I'd like to learn correctly.

In Thesis's loop.php, inside the post loop, I added a hook thesis_hook_inside_post($post_count).

Then, in my custom_functions.php, I created a new function and assigned it to that hook. This is the function:

/* Events Main Page Customization */
function show_custom_event_fields($post_count = '') {
 global $current_blog;
 $blog_id = $current_blog->blog_id;
 $eventsBlog = get_id_from_blogname('events');

	if ($blog_id == $eventsBlog) {

 $months = array("January","February","March","April","May","June","July","August","September","October","November","December");
// $key = 'event_month'; // our custom field name
 $m = get_post_custom_values('event_month'); // holding array
 $month = $m[0]; // assign value

 $d = get_post_custom_values('event_day');
 $day = $d[0];

 $y = get_post_custom_values('event_year');
 $year = $y[0];

 $l = get_post_custom_values('event_location');
 $location = $l[0];

 $s = get_post_custom_values('event_sponsor');
 $sponsor = $s[0];

 if ($sponsor == '') $sponsor = "n/a";

 $t = get_post_custom_values('event_time');
 $etime = $t[0];
 // show custom fields here, please
 ?>

Date: <?= $months[$month-1] . " " . $day . ", " . $year ?>

Time: <?= $etime ?>

Location: <?= $location ?>

Sponsor(s): <?= $sponsor ?>

	<?php
	} else {
 // ATTENTION: do not show the custom fields
	}

}
add_action('thesis_hook_inside_post', 'show_custom_event_fields');

It seems to be freezing and crashing Internet Explorer 6 and 7 most of the time. I haven't checked 8.

Also, Andrea:

When you say change the name in the style.css file as well, do you mean the commented area "Theme Name: " inside the CSS file? Can you give me an example?

"It also seems as if, even if I assign a separate installation of Thesis (directory name changed in wp-content/themes/ to something else) and write some custom functions in there and try to assign them, that the /events/ sub-blog of the main WPMU site still defaults to picking up the custom_functions.php file from the main site."

You have to change the name in the style.css file as well, if you change the folder name for a second copy. Then your sub-blog can find the right copy of the theme.

Hello everyone,

I'm a little stuck, and I am not sure if it's how I'm conceptualizing the structure of what I'm doing that's messing me up or not.

So, I've got WPMU running, and the Thesis theme across the site.

Basically, I use blogs as things other than, well, blogs.

This website is for a city.
http://elp.metalcast.net/events/
The events directory is a blog. The city people need to be able to add events, so I'm making each event a post, as you can see.
Each event also has some custom fields attached to it. event_month, event_day, event_sponsor, things like that.

My ish is this: On this events main front, I'd like to be able to display the posts in the feed, but also display a few of their custom fields, which have specific event place / time data.

I originally tried to set a static page with a custom function in Thesis as the "home page" of this directory, but it was showing the empty "page" content of the fake homepage rather than a list of posts. I know how to run a $wpmu mysql query to pull posts if I want, but I don't see the custom_fields anywhere in the tables in phpMyAdmin, though I could be overlooking them.

It also seems as if, even if I assign a separate installation of Thesis (directory name changed in wp-content/themes/ to something else) and write some custom functions in there and try to assign them, that the /events/ sub-blog of the main WPMU site still defaults to picking up the custom_functions.php file from the main site.

I was thinking I could edit "The Loop" in the Events install of Thesis to include displaying the custom_fields, but I can't get that install to take precedence over the main WPMU theme install for some reason. I'm confused as to that, as well.

Should this be it's own blog? Or should I be structuring this differently? I've tried even more than I'm saying, but I just am really at a loss.

If anyone could point me conceptually in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated. If this needs to be clarified, I'd be happy to do so.

Firebug is an extension for the Firefox browser and is the handiest thing you can ever use. Did I mention it's FREE?

There's a bunch of extra classes around those areas that are undeclared, so you won't find them as they aren't there. Just add them to your new theme's style sheets.

For example, to get the outline around the box:

.textwidget {
border-bottom:1px solid #CCCCCC;
border-left:1px solid #CCCCCC;

Looking at your page source, for the Toolbar Update for example you have different div hooks to control the style

1.
for the right column
- #third-section in parent theme's CSS for Home Page Layout
- .widget-section not found - but you can tweak if you set up own custom.css in child theme

2.
surrounding the whole widget
- #text-5 is auto-generated when text box used for widget, you can tweak this in your own custom.css
- .widget can be found in screen.css of child theme
- .widget_text not in any stylesheet, which means you have another hook to set up if you want in custom.css

3.
Toolbar Update!
for the widget title
- h2.widgettitle can be found in screen.css of child theme

4.
for the text inside the Text widget
- .textwidget is not declared in any of the stylesheets. So you can tweak this in custom.css

We're running Word Press Mu and Buddy Press and we are working on changing the default theme.(for buddy press) For some reason we can't find the css file for the widgets that are placed on the home page. These are widgets that are done through the admin panel. If you visit http://www.chatterbing.com and look at the Toolbar Update and the What's New, you'll have a better understanding of what I mean. I have looked in the screen.css file and every other file but, no luck. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks:)

Wondering if it's possible to move some or all theme options found in most premium themes to appear in the member's profile page (user-edit.php) versus the admin dashboard area?

I'm assuming the trick is to edit this line
add_action('admin_menu', 'mytheme_add_admin'); ?>
but not clear what the alternative would be to make it appear in the profile area.

Thx
