I have seen this issue many times and it has been linked to incorrect ownership of the wp-content/blogs.dir file.

Owners should be set to nobody:nobody

The apache line to fix this would be chown -R nobody:nobody blogs.dir
An easy way to do this is ftp using winsp and then selecting commands and then open terminal from the top left. Have the wp-content folder already open before you do this. Then type in chown -R nobody:nobody blogs.dir

If you can't do this on your server then have your hosting company do it.

Hi all,

Having a small problem. I created about 5 new blogs yesterday and I noticed that for all of them, none of my site-wide plugins were enabled. It was a little strange, as nothing has changed on the site (no new plugins, code changes, etc), but I did notice that 2.8.6 was available, so I did the upgrade and ran the Upgrade function from site admin.

Now, on these new blogs, the plugins are enabled, but I'm noticing that none of their support pages (archives, categories, comments, etc) are working right...they all 404. I checked my logs and I'm not seeing anything in the errors that would point out why this is happening.

This is my current .htaccess (again, untouched by me in a long time)... can anyone see why this might be happening?

@thekruser
It really has to do with the shared hosted environment and IP delegation. It's also not a matter of us enabling it, but that it will not allow for a shared IP address to be assigned to a Wildcard A-Record. Our support team can help you with this if you haven't contacted them already. That information is found here: http://www.godaddy.com/community/community.aspx?tab=support

It worked!. Thanks!

I think (after what Ms. andrea_r commented) it's because WP goes a bit nuts after creating a new blog; specially when you have a subdirectory blog created

BTW, I'm going to file a bug regarding this anyway (and/or why on the permalink admin page it still appears the .htaccess code)

I'm developing a WP-mu based site, and I'm creating my own themes.

Some of my blogs give me a 404 error when I look for single posts. For example: on http://sitios.diinf.usach.cl/tips/ the Pages works like a charm (using only index.php). However, the single posts doesn't work (with the same template).

Thinking it was a problem with my theme, I changed to Kubrick. However, it does still fail, giving a 'nice' 404 error.

By the way, I'm using the directory based approach

Any clues?

"-Hosting service (GoDaddy) will not enable wildcard DNS"
and
"-Followed steps at GoDaddy Help to no avail. Personally, I think that article is written for no other reason than to upsell you to static IP. It worked...I bought it. It didn't do anything, but they got my money!"

Both these things trouble me. Call up support. Tell them you're installing MU and you bought the static IP like they said. Get them to enable wildcard subdomains.

well, since your host does not allows wild card DNS and you don't have access to httpd.conf,my advise will be go for Sub directories style blog address.
If yo have just installed wpmu, you can re install it with the sub directories style blog address and that will work.

Given your situation,I don't see a good option for subdomain style blog address.
Hope it helps.

I've been trying to figure this out for a week now. Why can't you create a blog titled blog? http://mysite.com/blog

Issue:
When I create a new blog (subdomain), I get a 404-error.

Limitations:
-Cannot have access to httpd.conf
-Hosting service (GoDaddy) will not enable wildcard DNS
-No idea if mod_rewrite is enabled and they wont tell me (called multiple times...apparently it is a security risk according to their policies)

Actions tried:
-Followed steps at GoDaddy Help to no avail. Personally, I think that article is written for no other reason than to upsell you to static IP. It worked...I bought it. It didn't do anything, but they got my money!
-Read readme.txt, no solution for my unique situation.
-Read article referenced in readme.txt, not applicable.
-Have created an A host redirect (* to domain ip), did nothing.
-Created subdomain manually and pointed to WPMU installation directory. This works, but seems rather counterproductive given the goal of WPMU.

Questions:
-Is there a way to manipulate using .htaccess? If so, how?
-Is my methodology flawed?
-Have I done something incorrectly? I admittedly know very little about this type of problem.

The /blog/ is stuck in there on subfolder installs.

The cleanest way to handle it is to write a new page called Blog. No text.
Then go to Settings -> Reading and set that as the "show posts page".

no, it doesn't redirect. But it no longer gives a 404.

When someone visits mydomain.com/blog or mydomain.com/blog/, they get a WordPress-managed 404. I'd like them to be redirected to mydomain.com.

I am using Mac Leopard with Apache2, php 5, mysql 5.
I have mod-rewrite enabled in Apache2, although I am not sure how to test whether or not it's working.

We need more info on your home computer setup. What are you running for an OS? What Web server?

It is quite possible that mod_rewrite is not working, but we need more info first.

I am trying to set up a developer install on my home computer. Everything went fine, except when I attempt to access my added blogs, I get a 404 error. I can get to my front page blog just fine, and my 2 secondary blogs are created in the database. A check of the database shows correct paths. Everything looks like it should work, but I just can't access the blogs I created. htaccess appears to be as it should.

Does anyone have any ideas why WPMU isn't serving up those blogs?

Andrea, you have always been of great help - I was on your site and I learned that you consult for$45 per hr -- i wonder if that applies same for on-site help? --- next week if you have time i'd love to pick you up on one hour or so....
as of the thumbnails - its been a nightmare for me - i basically did everything from changing permission to permalinks to even changing core code -- and still no luck.

"I have been have nothing but problems with thumbnails and the upload folder,"

If you have a theme using the timthumb script, then yes - you will have problems.

Contact the theme author, show them this:
