@thekruser
It really has to do with the shared hosted environment and IP delegation. It's also not a matter of us enabling it, but that it will not allow for a shared IP address to be assigned to a Wildcard A-Record. Our support team can help you with this if you haven't contacted them already. That information is found here: http://www.godaddy.com/community/community.aspx?tab=support

"-Hosting service (GoDaddy) will not enable wildcard DNS"
and
"-Followed steps at GoDaddy Help to no avail. Personally, I think that article is written for no other reason than to upsell you to static IP. It worked...I bought it. It didn't do anything, but they got my money!"

Both these things trouble me. Call up support. Tell them you're installing MU and you bought the static IP like they said. Get them to enable wildcard subdomains.

well,since your host does not allows wild card DNS and you don't have access to httpd.conf,my advise will be go for Sub directories style blog address.
If yo have just installed wpmu,you can re install it with the sub directories style blog address and that will work.

Given your situation,I don't see a good option for subdomain style blog address.
Hope it helps.

Me too have the same problem.. The Image uploads well.. its in the directory.. but when i try to access it by giving its path, then its redirected to error page. Any body have a clear solution for this?.. I think all the requests except to wp-content is redirect to error page...
Is there any way to change the default upload directory to wp-content direcory.. I am using buddypress also... so i need to be done in both places...
I read all the posts in this thread.. many people have the same problem... but its still unanswered.... Please share if anybody have any idea about this problem...
Thanks,

Hi,

I would like to have 2 different types of links on my site. Each users that creates a new blog gets urls like
http://user.test.org/2009/11/14/whatever-topic/ which is fine for the blogs, but there is also a fixed article category which is present on every blog.

I would like these urls to be without the dates, so those should look like http://test.org/cat/whatever-topic/, but the links to all the blogs posts should remain like http://test.org/2009/11/14/whatever-topic/.

I'm the only one who will post the articles, so there won't be a change for double urls, and other then that it looks better without the date in the url :)

Is it possible to make this work? How would I do that?

Thanks :)

Hey guys, saw this today.

Look in /wp-settings.php

WP Ver: 2.8.5

Find at very top of page:

if ( !defined('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT') )
	define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '32M');

Weird, I ask WP dev people, Why is this not in the Admin-Settings in dashboard???

Issue:
When I create a new blog (subdomain), I get a 404-error.

Limitations:
-Cannot have access to httpd.conf
-Hosting service (GoDaddy) will not enable wildcard DNS
-No idea if mod_rewrite is enabled and they wont tell me (called multiple times...apparently it is a security risk according to their policies)

Actions tried:
-Followed steps at GoDaddy Help to no avail. Personally, I think that article is written for no other reason than to upsell you to static IP. It worked...I bought it. It didn't do anything, but they got my money!
-Read readme.txt, no solution for my unique situation.
-Read article referenced in readme.txt, not applicable.
-Have created an A host redirect (* to domain ip), did nothing.
-Created subdomain manually and pointed to WPMU installation directory. This works, but seems rather counterproductive given the goal of WPMU.

Questions:
-Is there a way to manipulate using .htaccess? If so, how?
-Is my methodology flawed?
-Have I done something incorrectly? I admittedly know very little about this type of problem.

Maybe these helps:
I have had the same problem. Upgraded wordpress-mu and sudden all images (and blogs) are not visible anymore because ?wrong links? but still on the server. Search for days forums and internet, nothing!

The thing i have noticed is that after wordpress-mu upgrade the .htaccess file in the wordpress directory whas gone. And the .htaccess file in the "root" (public_html) whas sudden empty!?

bug or not ??? i don't know

What i have done to fix these:
1 copied a new "test" wordpress-mu in the same "root" (public_html)
2 In the wp-config-sample.php file at the line $table_prefix = 'wp_';" i have changed 'wp_' in 'wp_test_' to not have problems with the tables already in the database from the original installation.
3 then i have followed the normal wordpress-mu installation instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WPMU
4 in ftp programme: show invisible files
5 copied the .htaccess file from my "test" wordpress-mu directory in my "original" wordpress-mu directory
6 opened these .htaccess from in my "original" directory in a texteditor and changed the line:
RewriteBase /test/
in
RewriteBase / (here name from the "original" directory) /
7 And now everything is working nice and smooth :)

! make back-up of your "original" wordpress-mu and database !

sorry for weird english

hope these helps

I had similar issues, file system path being inserted into the link path.

I solved this by using a filter like so:

add_filter('wp_get_attachment_url', 'nsir_wp_get_attachment_url');
function nsir_wp_get_attachment_url($url) {
	return preg_replace("/http:\/\/.*\.yourdomain\.com\/UPLOADBLOGSDIR\/(.*)?(\/files)/", "$2", $url, 1);
}

While looking into this I discovered a couple of things:
1 - If upload_path option is absolute it will not append ABSPATH
2 - If you move/rename you WP-CONTENT dir you need to define UPLOADBLOGSDIR
3 - blogs.php in your content directory is build to serve all uploaded files
4 - For non-image uploads (ie pdfs) if http://... is in the href it will mark it with a rel="attachment wp-att-[id]" and replace it with a link to the attachment post instead of the file url.

So in the above example it would not only remove the unwanted file path, but also the http://... making it a relative url.

I'm having a near identical problem but without your (z) issue

Chasing down from a scattergun direction - I noticed in cPanel that image files with the "JPG" extension (i.e. capitalised) are returned as text files by cPanel's file manager, whereas "jpg" (lowercase) extensions are returned as image files.

I doubt this has any effect on our shared issue, but just thought I'd toss it on the fire in case it does.

I have an interesting observation. I am using permanent links via .htaccess

1. http://myblog/blogname/2009/10/1/welcome , works (as it is supposed to)
2. http://myblog/blogname/2009/10/1/welcome/12345 , gives me the content of http://myblog/blogname/2009/10/1/welcome when the path is invalid
3. http://myblog/blogname/2009/10/1/welcome/12345/12345/ ,gives me a page with no content but other page features like header, footer are there.

Any ideas?. Should I add more rules to .htaccess

My good ness... I have not solved it yet. Although I doubt if anybody is going to hack my WPMU, I still want it too work. I have now recreated the error in a separate Linux server and will be debugging it from there. I still think it is with the .htaccess

I'll be moving the wp-content where it should be and hopefully it would work. This just means that I still do not understand the code for .htaccess.

Still this issue should be solved. I already have a couple of people signing of for a blog and sending me an email why they can't see their uploaded pics. AHHH!!!

@gulflee: 90% tells me your posts do not have any Meta Tags. Shares like this usually make use of meta tags. Install an SEO plugin e.g. "All In One SEO Pack". This should solve your problem without the hassle. :-)

Thanks Tim... I'll check there. Your help is appreciated, and I realize the biggest part of the problem, at least in my case, is my own deficit in knowledge. Which is why I'm backing off on the vps install until I can get myself up to speed. It looks to me like the biggest problem here is the overwhelming success of wpmu. It has attracted a bunch of novices like me, who see the power and value in it, but don't have a clue how to deploy.

Did you see the comment I left about commenting the line out in .htaccess? The files suddenly show up in the browser if you do that. This is part of the reason I'm moving my users off of that server, so if I trash it digging around, I'll just have to restore the server and won't have any customers mad at me. Also, I won't be under so much pressure to find answers.

There's plenty of help available, not just these forums. The majority of us here are giving our time freely to try and help.

You can look at various WordPress related job boards and Automattic.com (the company that puts out WordPress). They have paid support options that can help as well.

Wordpress mu is great but I am abandoning it on the vps server listed above simply because there is no help available to support wpmu. It seems that it either works for you or it doesn't. I am going to move the domain to a shared server, and in the mean time, use my vps to educate myself, and let my IT guy use it for a sandbox to get himself up to speed... a trade off that benefits us both in exchange for getting his help and advice. Thanks to everyone for your patience and what help you were able to offer. If I solve this problem, I will report my findings back here. :)

the url did not change (subdomain.domain.com/files/2009/10/images.jpg) but the .htaccess now works now (http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/uploaded-images-problem-after-281-upgrade) the image show well

I think I have the same or a similar problem. I also changed the uploads directory during installation, and when one uses Media Uploader it creates a broken link to the files in http://example.com/uploads/mycustomname/mediafile.jpg but I can only access the files by going to http://example.com/wp-content/uploads/mycustomname/mediafile.jpg

How can I tell Media Uploader to add the "wp-content" to the URL it generates or alternatively, how can I tell Apache to pull requests to http://example.com/uploads/mycustomname/mediafile.jpg

from http://example.com/wp-content/uploads/mycustomname/mediafile.jpg ?

@tim.moore
I'm using Author Avatar List Version 0.7.4

I can't tell you what is going on with the shared server because I don't have access to server settings, but I'll email tech support and ask if they can provide details. They support a flawless wp instal but won't/can't help with wpmu, so I could not use sub-domains there. This is why I want to use the VPS server.

I have lost almost all of my users (down to a about a dozen now), so I doubt I'm up against the 32,000 limit. Last night, I deleted all the user accounts and directories, and wiped the mu install, then did a brand new instal, which got rid of a bunch of problems, like rss feeds not working in dashboard, etc., but the image problem still exists. I have a paid tech guy looking at it now. This is what he has told me so far:

This line in the .htaccess file

RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/(.*) wp-content/blogs.php?file=$2 [L]

This reroutes anything requested in a files folder to the blogs.php file which is supposed to output the file.

This is why you can't pull up an image file directly. If I comment this line out of .htaccess it works on the main site but not for domain aliases.

Waiting now for more from him, or help from anyone who can. Thanks to all who are trying as this is clearly over my head.

Well, yeah, I talked with them, that's how I got the instructions from them. ;~)

Getting the same error as before, but with a bigger number.

Previous error message from WPMU:

This file is too big. Your php.ini upload_max_filesize is 2M.

Have you talked to your web host? It may be that they are limiting something on their end.

I kind of disagree with that, as not everyone is going to be uploading HUGE media files all the time. :)

Saw mention of a plugin that will allow you to easily change the upload directory for blogs. Not sure how well it works or what it's called, but I know others have had success with it.

It may be in this case, on this server, moving the directories around just isn't going to work (for whatever reason). Hardening the folders via permissions & ownership should be sufficient.

Thanks, but my web host sent me some instructions on how to change that file. I set it to 300 megs and I am still getting a similar error, even though my file size is just about 10% of the max_upload size (35 megs.)

Yes, drogoss, but the issues you are having is because WP and WPMU have become too large and are trying to do too much. They need to simplify the code and make things simpler for everyone, WP programmers and users alike.

Hello Eternal. A good idea. But if the folder resides within the WPMU directory, as I have tried, the files get uploaded but the link used by the front end is messed up. Which is the reason why the file icons do not appear in the library nor in the posts when inserted. :-)

Seems to me like the best thing to do is to let the admin of a specific blog set where any kind of media files (pics, videos, music) are stored and allow the user the options of having WPMU upload the files (a very bad idea) OR ftp the files up (works flawlessly).

Even better yet, forget having WPMU upload files at all. There are some excellent FREE ftp programs out there and he amount of extra effort required to upload a file via ftp is nil and worth the lack of hair pulling to upload via WPMU. There is also a Firefox plug in that allows you to ftp files.

Why re-invent the wheel?
