Okay I've resolved this issue by exporting the posts from the WP admin area, deleting all taxonomies (categories, tags, link categories, custom taxonomies) and then used WP's import function.

Just have to re-adjust a few things due to category ID changes, but everything appears well with the WPMU cosmos again!

---

Word of warning for those importing regular WP blogs via PHPMyAdmin / mySQL. Watch out for the wp_sitecategories table!

Best to use Ron's Advanced Export plugin and re-import in the Wordpress admin area.

The db connection for mu should be setup the same way that you setup your original wp scripts. Definately double check your user and password when you setup the db. Also, make sure to give the user full permissions to the db.

Also, if an install has failed then it has already created the wrong config file. I suggest deleting the config.php file and starting install over. If that doesn't work try deleting all files, uploading again and starting install over.

As far as subdomains for wordpress mu the main mu domain needs to accept wilcard enries. This means that anywordher.maindomain.com would work if setup as a blog.

I don't think go daddy give you access to httpd.conf files an the ability to edit the dns whichis necessary.

I don't think that you can get subdomain to work for mu on goaddy servers. WPMU uses virtual subdomains so you need to set up domain aliases.

Does godaddy servers let you edit dms entriesand the apache httpd.conf file?

Probably a very good point was made here:

I then decided to try installing it in the root of my hosting account on the primary domain.

That is the only thing that I haven't done (and for various reasons I can't do). If that's the problem then it's completely silly!

I suppose that if the error is about "establishing database connection" then the issue is with the godaddy mysql server, have another look at the full domain name and path to the database server. Post it here if it helps.

I'm just going to add some additional thoughts.

Is there a reason MU looks at the wp_sitecategories table for tags, link categories and custom taxonomies instead of the wp_x_terms table?

Should this be reported as a bug on Trac?

Okay I think I figured this out.

Take a look at this screenshot again:
http://i49.tinypic.com/xct9qs.jpg

We did some digging and found out that the circled term_id's are actually the cat_ID from the wp_sitecategories table, instead of the term_id from the wp_1_terms table.

So I was trying to figure out why the wp_sitecategories table was out of sync with the wp_1_terms table.

---

Here's another part of the puzzle:

The root blog is an imported blog from a regular Wordpress install done via PHPMyAdmin. I'm guessing MU never detected these terms, which is why our wp_sitecategories table is out of whack!

---

Then I read this thread:
http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/4102

Which had a similar problem to ours. He basically exported his posts in the Wordpress admin area, purged his current posts and reimported them, which correctly repopulated his wp_sitecategories table.

I'm about to do the same, but was wondering if there was a better way for MU to detect the missing terms?

I would be more inclined to just recreate those tables within the database, not drop them all.

you could, in theory, just drop the wp_1_whatever tables and not affect the rest of the install, but it's only the tags & categories affected.

you can backup just those tables:
wp_1_terms
wp_1_term_taxonomies
wp_1_term_relationships

Then drop 'em.

A nifty feature in phpmyadmin is the ability to copy tables as well, so make a test blog that's empty, then go in phpmyadmin and select the first terms table there, and under the Operations tab, tell it to copy it. It will ask for the table name of the new copy and just make it have _1_ in there.

Standard disclaimers apply: I have no idea if this will work, but it may help clean something up. You'd have to recreate your tags & categories. You may only need to do the term_taxonomy table. PLEASE backup the entire db before you do anything else, just in case you click the delete all button by accident.

It's definitely a puzzling issue though.

I've had an issue with term_id's and taxonomies for a while now.

To read about my problem, see here:
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/333023

MichaelH over on the Wordpress forums suggested I drop the tables and reinstall the blog.

The caveat is this problem only occurs on one of the blogs, which would be the root blog.

How do I go about recreating these tables without reinstalling the rest of the blogs on my MU install?

Is this even possible? If there's a better course of action for my problem (read the link I posted above), please let me know.

Question...does this solve the issue with new blogs on subdomains not showing up?

I followed the instructions, but still having issues with new blogs giving 404 error. It only works if I add the subdomains manually in the hosting account and point them to the installation directory, but that seems to be a bit counterproductive.

To be perfectly honest, I am really getting tired of GoDaddy all together. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer!!

Just a separate account will probably do. MU will run on a shared IP.

What host are you at? There's a couple that cripple MU if you're on the low-end packages.

First off, soem of the "will it work" may depend on your host. If it;s a shared host, you may have issues.

Yes, you can install it in a subdomain, but I gotta ask:

"I have a completely different site that is a subdomain that I want the MU installed in"

then why not install it there?

Whether or not the other sites on your webhost have WP or anything else is a non-issue. MU looks after its own blogs. most of the time.

If you DO wind up having issues, pony up the extra $10/month for a seperate hosting account for it.

What if I will have other website's that are totally different and will have nothing to do with the MU in this same hosting account?
Does MU require a dedicated hosting account for it and everything in it will be associated with MU or can all the other different websites have other thins besides MU, like regular wp?

Yes it can be done. The short version is you have to export all your current WP stuff (and backup), then wipe it clean,. install MU then import.

Hi,

The idea behind MU is that you can run multiple sites and blogs. It that what you are planning to do?

I think it would make sense if you wanted to have many people or many blogs running off of your mamaista.com site.

Imagine all your friends have a blog on your site:
http://www.mamaista.com/FredsBlog
http://www.mamaista.com/JillsBlog
http://www.mamaista.com/Helen
http://www.mamaista.com/Peter
...

Or you could use subdomains for each of the blogs.
Helen.mamaista.com
Peter.mamaista.com
photos.mamaista.com
tambourines.mamaista.com

All of the blogs could look different. All of the blogs could have different authors. The only thing that needs to tie them together is your base domain: mamaista.com

But if you just want to have one site, with a single blog then you don't need MU. If you are thinking you want to use Wordpress' CMS capabilities to administer your site, then just use regular Wordpress ( http://wordpress.org/ ) not MU.

Then you can have all your pages running on http://www.mamaista.com, controlled by Wordpress' CMS. One of those pages could list all your blog posts: http://www.mamaista.com/blog.

Unless you have a reason, you don't need Wordpress MU.

i did the same but tel now i cant find the admin bar :(

Set your current new user to be the Site admin user.

You will need access to the database, look in wp_sitemeta for a line with a meta_key of site_admins. It will currently look like:

a:1:{i:0;s:5:"admin";}

You need to change the admin to be your new users name, and the s:5 to be the length of your new user. E.G.

a:1:{i:0;s:9:"spacetest";}

spacetest is nine characters long so I've changed s:5 - s:9

When you next login your new user will be the site admin user, and you can access the plugins menu.

I got this solved by installing phpmyadmin. Wonder how phpmyadmin relates to this problem though... I had databases created without phpmyadmin at first time, using ispmanager pro.

n/w thanks everyone for your input.

I'm using CentOS, after googling I found out by default CentOS generates php error logs on /var/log/httpd/error_log. But when I took a look, there're no php errors reported so far.

Just in case I've also increased php memory limit to 50, but that doesn't seem to change or solve this problem.

I have the requisite wildcard DNS, separate database, and deluxe hosting. I used the built-in FTP client to upload it to the html directory. When the install would start to work, I would get an "error establishing database connection" and then a 403, 404, or HTTP 500 error screen.

I have single user WP's on separate databases, so I don't think the problem is there. I admit I am dumb when it comes to stuff like this, so please walk me through installing this thing. It is greatly appreciated.

can't find error yet. Only ones I have is that some stupid error with favicon, which I don't have anything on my clean install environment...

WordPress is too genius, that something like this happens rarely, so we're not ready to solve this. ;)

Blank scree = error.

Check the error logs. They may be in the etc/httpd/logs folder, depending on your OS.

I've been running wpmu for long time, never had any problems installing but this time on my first try with VPS is driving me crazy.

Installer's first page aka Step 1 shows properly. But it doesn't go to Step 2, or even if I type in wrong database name or password to generate error popups, it returns blank.

Wpmu and wp-content are now 777. Apache, PHP, MySQL running properly so far. What are the options, or where should I look further when this problem happens?
