Best bet would be to place wpmu into the root of it's own account. As you have discovered, wpmu doesn't like being used as an addon or via a redirect.

You can do it but you'll quickly discover it'll cause more issues down the road. Plus with most hosting setups (ie CPanel) if Apache has any issue like even a 404 that it can't deal with, it'll fall back to the main site.

Hi,

I have my primary Wordpress blog installed in the /public_html folder. Now i want to install WPMU on my server with blog.itechengine.com sub-domain settings.

I tried following things..
1) Installed it in /public_html/blogs - and i got structure like...

newblog.itechengine.com/blogs

2) Then i installed it it /blogs folder i.e. in the root folder - and i have structure like...

newblog.blog.itechengine.com

I dont want these both the cases, i just want to setup a WPMU blog which could result like....

blog.itechengine.com
newblog.itechengine.com and so on....

Please help me.... Ihave tried many times and many ways but still NO LUCK... Waiting for replies....

I doubt that you can install mu on the godaddy server if you want to use sub domains which is what most people want. You need to be able to edit the httpd.conf file to accept aliases and also add an aliasa zone in the dns file.

Hi.

I installed MU onto one on my hosted sites on Godaddy, and it worked fine, I got the MU welcome page telling me it needed stuff, I got on the horn with Godaddy, set up a database, I typed it the stuff it needed, and it worked.

I tried the exact same thing on another hosted account w Godaddy and I get the page saying "There doesn't seem to be a wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started." It then gives a button saying "Create a wp-config.php" file.

Based on the first successful installation, I know I shouldn't be seeing this page. I deleted all files from that account, and reinstalled, and get the same message. Twice.

Can someone help out, knowing that I don't speak techno-speak? What do I do?

Thanks, Jim

I'm having the same issue strangely with MU 2.8.6 installed on a subdomain.

No error messages in regards to wrong password, whatsoever.

The URL looks perfect too:
http://sub.domain.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fsub.domain.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fprofile.php

Things I've tried:
0. Tried resetting password with email.
1. I've resetted my admin password with an SQL MD5 query without.
2. manually created a new user

I fear that the subdomain might be causing an issue. Anybody experienced this issue before?

Hello,

I am trying to get Mu up and running on a Windows 2008 Server with IIS. I've got PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin up and running fine, and I have tested my connection to my empty DB for Wordpress with a little php page. All good.

I also have URL Rewrite enabled in IIS, but I don't have any rules set up yet since, honestly, I don't really know what I'm doing there.

But, when I fill out my Mu config page, which is as http://localhost.localdomain/index.php on my machine, it just returns a blank page to the same URL. There's nothing on it except for the Mu image at the top. No error message, nothing. I am trying to set it up using sub-directories, but shouldn't that page be throwing an error of some kind?

I'm pretty new to Windows server, and I know this isn't the best way to run Mu, but my workplace refused to go Linux.

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks a lot,
Moose

I do have the radio-button Sub-directories checked.

I can not use the mydomain.org in the domain field since that is our main server, and we have a lot of sub domains is use.

If you're up to coding the php and html directly, you could create a "master pages" directory (e.g. WPMU/wp-content/masterpages) and store the php files for them in there.

Then using something like the blog defaults plug-in, you set all new blogs to automatically have pages created where the content is a simple function command e.g.
[masterpage]document-1[/masterpage]

You then need to write a WP function into the theme or site functions file which basically says (this is NOT correct code - I'm not a programmer) ....

function.masterpages
if exists(function.masterpage()){
$document-name = 'document-name';
include $BLOG_URL . WP_CONTENT_DIR . "/masterpages/" . $document-name . ".php";
}

Then the content from your master document will appear on the page you auto-include for each blog in the blog defaults plugin settings.

Hopefully a coder will pop along to insert the correct code to run that function? If I had time I could copy and paste from a similar function, but I'm a little pressed right now and actually looking for something completely different to your query.

Alternatively - a little trickier to manage this and upgrading WPMU WILL lose your custom content (I know because it did it to me a couple of hours ago), you can create the page content direct within the blog defaults plugin's settings page - BUT KEEP A COPY OF THE CONTENT ON YOUR LOCAL PC !!!!

Gaz

I suggest you take a look at these existing bug reports:

In WordPress MU, where are you going to create a user that has an option "give me a blog"?

Can you provide a link so that we can see your site and what you are doing?

OK, silly question -- when you create a new user, it doesn't necessarily create a blog that would be accessible at user.mysite.com. Are you creating the blog AND the user or just the user?

Yes, but before I asked them to change it to AllowOverride FileInfo Options, so it set now like it should.

The defaulting setting on the
AllowOverride
is
AllowOverride None
, I believe, which would cause the server to not recognize a .htaccess file.
