Best bet would be to place wpmu into the root of it's own account. As you have discovered, wpmu doesn't like being used as an addon or via a redirect.

You can do it but you'll quickly discover it'll cause more issues down the road. Plus with most hosting setups (ie CPanel) if Apache has any issue like even a 404 that it can't deal with, it'll fall back to the main site.

Hi,

I have my primary Wordpress blog installed in the /public_html folder. Now i want to install WPMU on my server with blog.itechengine.com sub-domain settings.

I tried following things..
1) Installed it in /public_html/blogs - and i got structure like...

newblog.itechengine.com/blogs

2) Then i installed it it /blogs folder i.e. in the root folder - and i have structure like...

newblog.blog.itechengine.com

I dont want these both the cases, i just want to setup a WPMU blog which could result like....

blog.itechengine.com
newblog.itechengine.com and so on....

Please help me.... Ihave tried many times and many ways but still NO LUCK... Waiting for replies....

Buddy Press plugin at buddypress.org should work for your needs. There is also Donchas sitewide tags, sitewide comments that can be used.

Feedwordpress plugin is a great option because you can setup feeds that actually get copied to whatever ite you want from anysite. It's very flexible.

I don't think that you can get subdomain to work for mu on goaddy servers. WPMU uses virtual subdomains so you need to set up domain aliases.

Does godaddy servers let you edit dms entriesand the apache httpd.conf file?

Probably a very good point was made here:

I then decided to try installing it in the root of my hosting account on the primary domain.

That is the only thing that I haven't done (and for various reasons I can't do). If that's the problem then it's completely silly!

@thekruser
It really has to do with the shared hosted environment and IP delegation. It's also not a matter of us enabling it, but that it will not allow for a shared IP address to be assigned to a Wildcard A-Record. Our support team can help you with this if you haven't contacted them already. That information is found here: http://www.godaddy.com/community/community.aspx?tab=support

Both these things trouble me. Call up support. Tell them you're installing MU and you bought the static IP like they said. Get them to enable wildcard subdomains.

well, since your host does not allows wild card DNS and you don't have access to httpd.conf,my advise will be go for Sub directories style blog address.
If yo have just installed wpmu, you can re install it with the sub directories style blog address and that will work.

Given your situation,I don't see a good option for subdomain style blog address.
Hope it helps.

Issue:
When I create a new blog (subdomain), I get a 404-error.

Limitations:
-Cannot have access to httpd.conf
-Hosting service (GoDaddy) will not enable wildcard DNS
-No idea if mod_rewrite is enabled and they wont tell me (called multiple times...apparently it is a security risk according to their policies)

Actions tried:
-Followed steps at GoDaddy Help to no avail. Personally, I think that article is written for no other reason than to upsell you to static IP. It worked...I bought it. It didn't do anything, but they got my money!
-Read readme.txt, no solution for my unique situation.
-Read article referenced in readme.txt, not applicable.
-Have created an A host redirect (* to domain ip), did nothing.
-Created subdomain manually and pointed to WPMU installation directory. This works, but seems rather counterproductive given the goal of WPMU.

Questions:
-Is there a way to manipulate using .htaccess? If so, how?
-Is my methodology flawed?
-Have I done something incorrectly? I admittedly know very little about this type of problem.

Question...does this solve the issue with new blogs on subdomains not showing up?

I followed the instructions, but still having issues with new blogs giving 404 error. It only works if I add the subdomains manually in the hosting account and point them to the installation directory, but that seems to be a bit counterproductive.

so I think I may need both a seperate hosting account for it, "

Just a separate account will probably do. MU will run on a shared IP.

What host are you at? There's a couple that cripple MU if you're on the low-end packages.

First off, soem of the "will it work" may depend on your host. If it;s a shared host, you may have issues.

Yes, you can install it in a subdomain, but I gotta ask:

"I have a completely different site that is a subdomain that I want the MU installed in"

then why not install it there?

Whether or not the other sites on your webhost have WP or anything else is a non-issue. MU looks after its own blogs. most of the time.

If you DO wind up having issues, pony up the extra $10/month for a seperate hosting account for it.

more notes: my primary domain is not the site that I want the MU in, I have a completely different site that is a subdomain that I want the MU installed in, is this possible or do I have to have MU on the primary domain associated with my hosting? What if I will have other website's that are totally different and will have nothing to do with the MU in this same hosting account?
Does MU require a dedicated hosting account for it and everything in it will be associated with MU or can all the other different websites have other thins besides MU, like regular wp?

Hi guys,

I have my hosting set up under a specific primary domain, and have all sorts of other sites set up under it as subdomains. One of these subdomains I would like to add WPMU into, can I do that or does it have to be in the primary domain?

Thanks,

"- Create a blog network that is based at http://www.mydomain.com This would be the main site of the blog network and would aggregate content (posts, etc.) from the other sites within the network.

- The other sites in the network (I'll call them subsites) would live on subdomains such as subsite1.mydomain.com, subsite2.mydomain.com, etc. Each of these would really be the main content sites for each of the specific topic areas.

All of the sites will be related. So, I'd like to be able to manage users, etc. across all subsites (and the main site)."

This is exactly what WPMU does, right out of the box. Except for post aggregation.

The aggregation of the posts to the main page can be done via a plugin. (There are a number of options - I like Sitewide Tags plugin) You do NOT need a special theme.

If you want each sub-blog to have its own domain, get the Domain mapping plugin.

All plugins mentioned are in the WP.org plugin repo.

As an aside, I am looking to setup a blog network in a similar manner to the Envato Tuts+ network or the Fuel Brand Network sites, but for my niche topic.

[long list of urls snipped]
Etc.

OR
[long list of urls snipped]
Etc.

NOTE: I will have domain names for each of my subsites that I plan to forward to the location where the subsite lives.

Hello,

I am getting ready to create a blog network for a group of about 10 or so sites. Before I install anything, I wanted to get some feedback on the best way to setup WPMU to accomplish my goals.

Here's what I'd like to do:

- Create a blog network that is based at http://www.mydomain.com This would be the main site of the blog network and would aggregate content (posts, etc.) from the other sites within the network.

- The other sites in the network (I'll call them subsites) would live on subdomains such as subsite1.mydomain.com, subsite2.mydomain.com, etc. Each of these would really be the main content sites for each of the specific topic areas.

All of the sites will be related. So, I'd like to be able to manage users, etc. across all subsites (and the main site).

Anyway, I am just looking for any recommendations or advice on the best way to go about setting up WPMU. My initial plan is to install WPMU at the root of http://www.mydomain.com. I am trying to decide whether or not to use subdomains for each of the subsites or just use subdirectories too?

I appreciate any thoughts and insights you can share.

Regards,
Ryan

Hi guys,

I wanna install over 1000 subdomains, is there a plugin which can do this, rather than manually adding?

Help would be greatly appreciated ;)

Cheers, Will
