I assumed I did, as it turns out, I can alter the permissions of all folders but when I try to alter the permissions of blogs.dir from 755 to 777, it says I cannot.

I'm going to ask my administrator to change it on his end if he can, but I'm still convinced I am the owner of that folder.

Could this be the answer to my problems?

Thanks for the help Andrea, I've got my fingers crossed that this little hiccup could be causing all my problems because it seems easily fixed.

Permissions and file ownerships seem good, it was the first thing I checked. WP-CONTENT has all 7s and my public_html is as open as it can be.

When I enter CPanel, I can enter the file structures but again, even trying to view the images within CPanel brings up a 404 error. I can however, download these images to my computer and view them.

This is a rather bizarre situation.

To make things easier, I've taken a screenshot of what the file-structure looks like in my FTP client. The images are going here without a problem.

http://i47.tinypic.com/hvujo7.jpg

On the installation, Wordpress is trying to display "http://ebolacola.org/files/2009/11/1258674466471.jpg" and receiving a 404 error.

I assumed it was looking in the right place? I can't see where it's going wrong. Hopefully my extra information can make this process easier.

Thanks,

Hello friends,

Yesterday I woke up to my hosting admin telling me he had moved my website to a faster server. I was quite happy, until I realised that there are no uploaded images being displayed, site-wide.

This is obviously quite frustrating, since I serve multiple blogs and have front-page posts to worry about too, each one containing a preview image which is now broken.

Uploaded images crunch ok and when I insert them into posts they do not display at all.

I've tried entering the old server and have backed up my blogs directory and the .htaccess file, but so far nothing has worked.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful!

Thanks in advance,

Best bet would be to place wpmu into the root of it's own account. As you have discovered, wpmu doesn't like being used as an addon or via a redirect.

You can do it but you'll quickly discover it'll cause more issues down the road. Plus with most hosting setups (ie CPanel) if Apache has any issue like even a 404 that it can't deal with, it'll fall back to the main site.

Hi,

I have my primary Wordpress blog installed in the /public_html folder. Now i want to install WPMU on my server with blog.itechengine.com sub-domain settings.

I tried following things..
1) Installed it in /public_html/blogs - and i got structure like...

newblog.itechengine.com/blogs

2) Then i installed it it /blogs folder i.e. in the root folder - and i have structure like...

newblog.blog.itechengine.com

I dont want these both the cases, i just want to setup a WPMU blog which could result like....

blog.itechengine.com
newblog.itechengine.com and so on....

Please help me.... Ihave tried many times and many ways but still NO LUCK... Waiting for replies....

The db connection for mu should be setup the same way that you setup your original wp scripts. Definately double check your user and password when you setup the db. Also, make sure to give the user full permissions to the db.

Also, if an install has failed then it has already created the wrong config file. I suggest deleting the config.php file and starting install over. If that doesn't work try deleting all files, uploading again and starting install over.

As far as subdomains for wordpress mu the main mu domain needs to accept wilcard enries. This means that anywordher.maindomain.com would work if setup as a blog.

I don't think go daddy give you access to httpd.conf files an the ability to edit the dns whichis necessary.

Hi sjefen6

did you have any luck yet?

Im looking for the same, kinda, but I am totally new at this, have newer even tried wordpress, or blogging, but I would like to start up a blogging community, where people can share their passionate creations. (www.a-passionate-creation.org)

I realize that wordpress MU probably is the right place to start, but I expect to need a lot of baby newbie-help.

anyways.. hosting this monster?

what about one.com, with 25 Gigs of serverspace? isnt that enough?
if every participant agrees to keep it low&compressed, it could be enough for, say 2500 participants?

what are the issues using one.com for this ?

my stuff can be seen at http://www.ohlers.com/indexhibit/
but this blog-community should be for a wide range of passionate, creative people sharing their wildest, passionate dreams, experiences and ideas :-)

help me out?

thanks alot everyone :-)

I suppose that if the error is about "establishing database connection" then the issue is with the godaddy mysql server, have another look at the full domain name and path to the database server. Post it here if it helps.

Debian/Ubuntu debian-installer ate my hard drive. I won't use it again, for anything, anytime soon.

All my servers have been Red Hat or Fedora based for years, and even aside from Debian's unfixed critical data loss bugs, Debian/Ubuntu has failed to impress me as a server platform.

CentOS (based on RHEL) already has high availability features built in which you can start using right away.

I also switched to nginx from apache on my main site (which uses WordPress, not MU) some time ago and I'm highly impressed. Apache has turned into a bloated nightmare, stripping it down is a royal pain, and it's also a bit too crashy. The only real issue you'll run into is that nginx uses a different format for its rewrite rules, so you'll have to port those. This example should help.

I currently have several instances of WP running on Hostgator. As MU won't work from a subfolder on HG, I have decided to sign up for a second Hostgator account so I can start from scratch, building the MU site in the root and migrating the blogs in at my own pace. Once the new site is built, I was planning to simply point my domain at the new account.. et voila.

I was planning to edit my hosts file so that I see the 'new' site - to avoid having to change URLs in the database later.

Just wondering if this is the best approach, and if there is anything else I should be aware of?

I have the requisite wildcard DNS, separate database, and deluxe hosting. I used the built-in FTP client to upload it to the html directory. When the install would start to work, I would get an "error establishing database connection" and then a 403, 404, or HTTP 500 error screen.

I have single user WP's on separate databases, so I don't think the problem is there. I admit I am dumb when it comes to stuff like this, so please walk me through installing this thing. It is greatly appreciated.

Thank you both for your answers. I didn't know I could simply use my computer's network name. Everything is finally working.

It was related to PHP 5.3 i used
