You can't put an IP address in a CNAME record. Put in the main domain of the MU site.

I'm having the same problem. I have domains mapped to one WPMU install. The home pages work though I'm unable to get to the pages or posts. mod_rewrite is enabled. All DNS records have been filled a month or so ago.

If using WPMU to host multiple sites with multiple domains, how should the CNAME record be filled out? Should the CNAME record point to an IP address (in lieu of the A-record, as per the plugin instructions)?

And does a CNAME record need to be filled out such that both http://www.domain2.com and domain2.com point to the IP address of the WPMU install rather than domain2.com?

You only have the DNS set up for http://www.monetizemylife.com and not monetizemylife.com. MU is redirecting the www to the non www which your browser can't find. That gives you the WSOD.

Hey Andrea,

I've Got a CNAME record set up for MonetizeMyLife.com -

Here's Proof of propogation from What'sMyDNS.com - http://skitch.com/foodin65/nehca/whats-my-dns-global-dns-propagation-checker

Here's the set-up for the cname at Joker.com -
http://skitch.com/foodin65/nehpc/domain-name-registration-at-joker.com-easy-to-use-control-panel-and-reseller-api-interface

Here's the WP backend setting for domain mapping showing that the domain is indeed set up properly in the back on Wordpress - http://skitch.com/foodin65/nehp1/domain-mapping-monetizemylife-2.0-wordpress

And yet, the blog is still blank when I add the domain mapping. If I delete "monetizemylife.com" from the Domain Mapping Settings page... the blog shows up fine. So, I'm curious - what I'm doing wrong with my Domain Mapping setting that wordpress mu doesn't know what to show?

Best bet would be to place wpmu into the root of it's own account. As you have discovered, wpmu doesn't like being used as an addon or via a redirect.

You can do it but you'll quickly discover it'll cause more issues down the road. Plus with most hosting setups (ie CPanel) if Apache has any issue like even a 404 that it can't deal with, it'll fall back to the main site.

I have my primary Wordpress blog installed in the /public_html folder. Now i want to install WPMU on my server with blog.itechengine.com sub-domain settings.

I tried following things..
1) Installed it in /public_html/blogs - and i got structure like...

newblog.itechengine.com/blogs

2) Then i installed it it /blogs folder i.e. in the root folder - and i have structure like...

newblog.blog.itechengine.com

I dont want these both the cases, i just want to setup a WPMU blog which could result like....

blog.itechengine.com
newblog.itechengine.com and so on....

Thanks andrea! That's good to know for the future. I'm still finding my way around this.

DeannaS, if you're still around...I switched to wpcal. GREAT idea. It's a fabulous plugin and very easy for the end user.

I do have a major important quotes on it though. I moved it over to the Plugins forum to stay on track though. If you could look, that'd be great. I mean if anyone could help me figure it out I'd pay. Short on time, sigh.

I don't think that you can get subdomain to work for mu on goaddy servers. WPMU uses virtual subdomains so you need to set up domain aliases.

Does godaddy servers let you edit dms entriesand the apache httpd.conf file?

Thanks Deanna and Andrea.

I came across that calendar plugin, but haven't tried it. I will definitely do so; I think I've made some progress, so I want to see if I can make it work this way first though.

I am reading about it and may very well end up with wpcal.

In the meantime, at like 2 a.m. last night I made a change to get the custom fields to display like an event listing. It shows up fine in Firefox and Chrome: http://elp.metalcast.net/events/

That "ul" which contains the event details are custom fields.

Now, this may not be the greatest way. If it's horrible please smack me aside the head, I'd like to learn correctly.

In Thesis's loop.php, inside the post loop, I added a hook thesis_hook_inside_post($post_count).

Then, in my custom_functions.php, I created a new function and assigned it to that hook. This is the function:

/* Events Main Page Customization */
function show_custom_event_fields($post_count = '') {
 global $current_blog;
 $blog_id = $current_blog->blog_id;
 $eventsBlog = get_id_from_blogname('events');

	if ($blog_id == $eventsBlog) {

 $months = array("January","February","March","April","May","June","July","August","September","October","November","December");
// $key = 'event_month'; // our custom field name
 $m = get_post_custom_values('event_month'); // holding array
 $month = $m[0]; // assign value

 $d = get_post_custom_values('event_day');
 $day = $d[0];

 $y = get_post_custom_values('event_year');
 $year = $y[0];

 $l = get_post_custom_values('event_location');
 $location = $l[0];

 $s = get_post_custom_values('event_sponsor');
 $sponsor = $s[0];

 if ($sponsor == '') $sponsor = "<span class='fade'>n/a</a>";

It seems to be freezing and crashing Internet Explorer 6 and 7 most of the time. I haven't checked 8.

Also, Andrea:

When you say change the name in the style.css file as well, do you mean the commented area "Theme Name: " inside the CSS file? Can you give me an example?

"It also seems as if, even if I assign a separate installation of Thesis (directory name changed in wp-content/themes/ to something else) and write some custom functions in there and try to assign them, that the /events/ sub-blog of the main WPMU site still defaults to picking up the custom_functions.php file from the main site."

You have to change the name in the style.css file as well, if you change the folder name for a second copy. Then your sub-blog can find the right copy of the theme.

"this means that when I point my domain to the IP address using an A-Record, the domain is being passed to the WPMU install at the web-root... and it has no idea what to do with it."

Yep, that's exactly what's going on.

Instead of the A record, you'll have to use a CNAME record to map the domain to the right MU install.

Hello everyone,

I'm a little stuck, and I am not sure if it's how I'm conceptualizing the structure of what I'm doing that's messing me up or not.

So, I've got WPMU running, and the Thesis theme across the site.

Basically, I use blogs as things other than, well, blogs.

This website is for a city.
http://elp.metalcast.net/events/
The events directory is a blog. The city people need to be able to add events, so I'm making each event a post, as you can see.
Each event also has some custom fields attached to it. event_month, event_day, event_sponsor, things like that.

My ish is this: On this events main front, I'd like to be able to display the posts in the feed, but also display a few of their custom fields, which have specific event place / time data.

I originally tried to set a static page with a custom function in Thesis as the "home page" of this directory, but it was showing the empty "page" content of the fake homepage rather than a list of posts. I know how to run a $wpmu mysql query to pull posts if I want, but I don't see the custom_fields anywhere in the tables in phpMyAdmin, though I could be overlooking them.

It also seems as if, even if I assign a separate installation of Thesis (directory name changed in wp-content/themes/ to something else) and write some custom functions in there and try to assign them, that the /events/ sub-blog of the main WPMU site still defaults to picking up the custom_functions.php file from the main site.

I was thinking I could edit "The Loop" in the Events install of Thesis to include displaying the custom_fields, but I can't get that install to take precedence over the main WPMU theme install for some reason. I'm confused as to that, as well.

Should this be it's own blog? Or should I be structuring this differently? I've tried even more than I'm saying, but I just am really at a loss.

If anyone could point me conceptually in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated. If this needs to be clarified, I'd be happy to do so.

Andrea I think I figured it out.

The WPMU install I'm working with here isn't installed at my web root folder. It's installed in a sub-folder.

The web-root is MFCommunity.com - a buddypress site.

nLightOnline.com is in a sub-folder on my host. I assume this means that when I point my domain to the IP address using an A-Record, the domain is being passed to the WPMU install at the web-root... and it has no idea what to do with it.

On my sites, when I remove the mapped domain from the back-end. The blog shows up perfectly. Example: http://mml2.nlightonline.com works great when I don't tell WMPU to map it to http://www.monetizemylife.com.

Any Ideas?
