Hi all - I started using MU in 2005 (ish) before it hit v1 for the wurk.net network of blogs (http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1008). The site's in a bit of a state of disarray right now due to a lack of time and resources but I'm planning on re-launching it fairly soon, and probably via the multiuser goodness of MU.

I switched from MU a while back and have been running all of the blogs in wurk.net from a single install of normal WP, but with a bunch of custom plugins to handle re-directs and login cookies, etc.

Anyhoo, my question is pretty simple... is there an existing plugin for MU that allows new users to place their blogs in one (or more) predefined categories as they're created. Ie, the new user create page will have fields for username, password, email, etc, PLUS a dropdown box that lets that user categorise their blog?

Anything like that around, or is it already baked into MU? I haven't used it for so long that I'm totally out of touch with it!

Ah... ok. Asked too soon. There's this plugin http://certiopensource.blogspot.com/2007/05/wordpress-mu-blog-categories-plugin.html.

However, going by the comments on the link there, there seems to be a few issues with it and 2.6.1. Anyone got this working with 2.6.5?

Actually, just had a bit of a quick think and this shouldn't really take too long to code myself - and then at least it'll do *exactly* what I want it to

Feel free to just ignore me as I prattle on here...

there are two other similar plugins available:

    a) http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/blog-types
    b) http://wpmudevorg.wordpress.com/project/new-blog-default-categories-plus-search-and-replace

to be honest, both solutions are not exactly perfect from my point of view, by all means if you come up with something better keep us updated here.

Excellent. The first one you both posted looks like it might do the job. Thanks all.

And hey again Andrea - actually think I've been following you on Twitter for a little while! ;o)
