I have heard its not possible, i have searched these forums through but no answer.
How, if possible does one get wpmu to have normal wordpress galleries?
How do i get Wordpress upgraded to WPMU without losing over 500 galleries?

what galleries are you talking about? the built in photo galleries?
I have no experience with that, but where did you read that? give us a link or wait for someone with experience with photo galleries to reply. sorry.
If you're talking about galleries made internally with WP and you want to move to WPMU - you WILL lose them.
The image locations are different in WPMU.
Yes, I *have* done this before, and I *have* had to fix it manually.

How did you do it though? Did you have to import them 1 by 1?
I manually uploaded the images to each post again.
Simply sticking them in the same folders or the new folders didn't do it. It was def. a manual job.
this plugin might help you at least add pictures from the server into the media gallery but I haven't tested it with wpmu. give it a try if you need to: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/add-from-server/
at least you would be able to import the images into the right media library.
You can also make a direct query on the MySQL PhPmyadmin and update all links in one query to the new location
