My host tells me the server is set up properly yet pages below the homepage (blog posts, pages, etc.) return 404s with any permalink other than the default.

I am only left to guess that it is the httpd.conf given directio nfrom here: http://www.blogopreneur.com/2006/11/06/installing-wordpress-mu-on-a-cpanelwhm-server/

I am on a reseller account with Hostrocket and can't find it. I'm told it should be here: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf or /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf

A search returns these similarities but I can't access these files: /.cpanel/datastore/_usr_local_apache_bin_httpd_-v

    1. Am I on the right track regarding a solution? Does the httpd.conf have anything to do with the problem here?
    2. If so, any idea how to get at it? Does it not exist on my server?

Is mod_rewrite enabled? Got .htaccess file?

What pertains httpd.conf - not sure if your problem has anything to do with it, but if you have ssh access type locate httpd.conf

That's really a question for your host as, even with the locate, the OS and/or hosting platform you;re using may use a differently named file and/or not provide access to it for you.

edit: Hosting platforms (ie CPanel, Direct Admin, Ensim, etc) have a habit of redoing files for their own liking.
