The MU forums have moved to WordPress.org

(Plugin: Domain Mapping) Is this possible? (26 posts)

    Hi all,
I've installed Donchas Domain Mapping plugin for Wordpress MU.

The MU installation is on the domain soccerstar.org with several subdomains, such as waynerooney.soccerstar.org etc. I understand how I use the plugin to re-direct a sub-domain to external domain-name. I've done that for waynerooney.soccerstar.org > waynerooneyonline.com without any problem.

    But here comes my question:
I would like to have all my blogs within the MU installation and create all posts etc from there instead of doing it on the separate Wordpress installation on waynerooneyonline.com.

    So my question is:
How should I do in order to have waynerooney.soccerstar.org pointing towards waynerooneyonline.com and still be able to manage the blog from the MU-admin page on waynerooney.soccerstar.org/wp-admin?

    I'm using Dreamhost.

    Kind regards,
    Daniel Bergstrom

You don't. You mapped it to a different domain.

The backend is *still* part of your MU install, it's just the domain name is changed.

    Let me explain my problem:

On Waynerooneyonline.com I have a regular Wordpress installation. I would like to export the posts from there and import it on my Wordpress MU installation on waynerooney.soccerstar.org. But still I want the URL to remain as Waynerooneyonline.com as I think that's more brandable.

    To clarify:

If a visitor visits Waynerooneyonline.com they shouldn't notice that they actually are on waynerooney.soccerstar.org.

If a visitor visits waynerooney.soccerstar.org they should think that they are on waynerooneyonline.com.

    Appreciate all help!

    Kind regards,
    Daniel

Well, in your first post you said you already mapped the domain...

Go to the exisiting WP install. Export the posts. Now go to the sub-blog. Import.

Then use the domain mapping plugin to map the domain to the sub-blog.

What I did was to map the Waynerooney.soccerstar.org to Waynerooneyonline.com. What happend then was just that I was re-directed to the old WP-installation on Waynerooneyonline.com, not to my MU-installation on waynerooney.soccerstar.org.

Do I need to change A or CNAME to be able to achieve this?

Sorry for my confusion. I'm pretty new into this.

"Do I need to change A or CNAME to be able to achieve this?"

Um, yes. Since the domain is pointing at the old install still. you need to point it to the MU install.

MU can't handle that part. Because it's DNS records...

    Andrea,
Great, now we are getting closer to solve this issue for me!

What exactly should I add for Waynerooneyonline.com? A or CNAME?

Do both of the sites needs to be on the same host? Today I have the MU on one host and the Waynerooneyonline.com on Dreamhost.

No, they don;t have to be on the same host.

If the IP of the mu install shows the actual MU install, then add an A record to your domain for the MU install IP. (check first).

If not, add a cname record to park your domain on top of the MU install (not the sub-blog, the mu domain. Mu will know what to do from there)

    Hi,
Sorry for being a newbie but what do you mean with see if the "IP of the mu install shows the actuall MU install".

Your website has an associated IP address. Type it into your browser.
Do you see your WPMU site? If yes, then you can use an A record for domain mapping.

Ok, so now a few days later after a small holiday trip I'm back.

    Here's the latest info:

    1. I have added a A record for Waynerooneyonline.com pointing towards my WPMU installation at IP 79.99.3.84 at my Dreamhost account.
    2. In my WPMU installation (Soccerstar.org) I have added domain mapping for waynerooney.soccerstar.org pointing towards waynerooneyonline.com.

But when accessing Waynerooneyonline.com I just receive an error,

    "Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server. "

    What am I doing wrong?

    Kind regards,
    Daniel

When I visit the IP-address 79.99.3.84 I don't get to see an MU install but a page saying "It works!".

Soccerstar.org has that IP-address, ping it and you will see.

Andrea asked if the IP-address pointed to your MU install, you said yes, but it doesn't (okay, you didn't explicitly say yes but your response reads a 'yes').
If I'm not mistaken you can't use a shared IP for domainmapping.

    Right. :)

In that case, he should be able to use a CNAME record instead.

So a CNAME record for Waynerooneyonline.com pointing towards the IP of the WPMU?

    Thanks both of you!

CNAME don't point to IP, they point to domains.

So a CNAME pointing to the DOMAIN of your WPMU install should do it.

ok, to soccerstar.org (main MU site) or waynerooney.soccerstar.org?

to soccerstar.org, because that's your main MU site. Like I said.

    Ok,
CNAME pointing from Waynerooneyonline.com towards Soccerstar.org
Domain map from waynerooney.soccerstar.org towards waynerooneyonline.com

As you can see now both sites have the same IP so it seems that the CNAME is pointing correct but I still get the wrong message on Waynerooneyonline.com.

Do I have to wait or is it something else I'm doing wrong?

It looks like the CNAME is active, or? Waynerooneyonline.com points towards the same IP as Soccerstar.org now but I get the error message?

You set cname to point to the first domain?

That's a 403 forbidden which means your server settings on whatever folders are off.

Yes, CNAME points to the MU-installation at Soccerstar.org.

    Andrea,
What do you mean that the server settings are off? Where can I adjust that?
