Hi, hope this saves someone else from scratching their head like me for 2 hours.
I had upgraded my WPMU install from 2.7.1 to 2.8.1 manually. (after backing up!)
I then copied across the old wp-content folder, and clicked upgrade in the Site Admin of the Dashboard.
Everything looked good, except the photos within the website had vanished. (despite being within the correct blogs.dir folder within wp-content.)
The fix, was to also copy across the previous .htaccess file in the root directory of the install.
Photos now working beautifully, and I'm very happy.
so for me:
1. backup, both folders and database. Then rename folder e.g. /public_html to /backup_public_html
2. download 2.8.1 wpmu, unzip and upload to /public_html
3. Restore wp-config.php
4. Restore /wp-content/
5. Restore .htaccess
Now just need someone to fix the "WordPress MU 2.8.1 is available! Please update."
