Say I want to publish two or more blogs that cater for different towns in my area... I know I can achieve this with Wordpress mu but what if I want to publish a post on both blogs simultaneously (maybe because it is county news that relates to both towns) can I do this with Wordpress Mu?

Not by default in MU, no.

But, if you have a desktop client like BlogDeck (I think that's it) that'll do it.

BlogDesk under windows does offer the ability to post to multiple blogs at once.

But does that allow you to choose which posts from your Master Blog get duplicated?

The great thing about something like BlogDesk is that you can select exactly which blogs you want each post to go to, and you can then go in and make minor modifications to the post in each blog if you want to.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/broadcast-mu/
"allows you to broadcast a post to one or more other blogs on the same installation of WordPress MU by simply checking the box next to those you wish to send it to."
    - though I haven't tested it yet :-)
