Hi, well I'm still trying to get this installed and I tried getting modrerite to work, but how should I know if it is working for sure?

Is this your own server or a hosted one?

A quick Google search pointed me towards apache_get_modules() which returns an array of loaded modules. The installer now uses that function if it's available. It will only mention mod_rewrite now if that function isn't available or if mod_rewrite isn't loaded.
Hopefully this will help debug lookup problems in the future!
