Installed MU but CANNOT LOGIN (18 posts)

    Hello! I am a newbie to MU. I have done hundreds of standard WP installs. But this is my first time at trying MU.

    I have a site http://www.mybucketlist.ws I am trying to install MU in user.mybucketlist.ws

    I have downloaded WordPress-MU-2.8.4a.zip file. I extracted and folder and uploaded files to root directory of user.mybucketlist.ws

    Using Internet Explorer I went through the install wizard. It says that MU has been installed and tells me a my user name is admin and gives me a computer generated password.

    I click login button which takes me to http://user.mybucketlist.ws/wp-login.php
    I use the username and password provided by the install wizard and it says "The webpage cannot be found" in a standard internet explorer message.

    Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have tried multiple installs but get same results each time.

    Thanks,

    Derek

    Couple of things:

    • check your .htaccess file -- what does it look like?
    • do you have mod_rewrite enabled? are you using linux and apache?

    Sorry if this is a dumb question... but I am not sure on all of this. I am use to using wordpress which is just pretty much plug and play.
    How do I find out this information?

    The .htaccess file is a hidden file in the root directory of your WPMU install (WP has one too).

    To find out about mod_rewrite, I'd need to know if you are using a hosting service or if you have your own server.

    Am encountering exactly the same problem, the content of my htaccess file is:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /

    #uploaded files
    RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/$ index.php [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !.*wp-content/plugins.*
    RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/(.*) wp-content/blogs.php?file=$2 [L]

    # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^.*/wp-admin$
    RewriteRule ^(.+)$ $1/ [R=301,L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
    RewriteRule . - [L]
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(wp-.*) $2 [L]
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(.*\.php)$ $2 [L]
    RewriteRule . index.php [L]

    <IfModule mod_security.c>
    <Files async-upload.php>
    SecFilterEngine Off
    SecFilterScanPOST Off
    </Files>
    </IfModule>

    Also, as well as being unable to login - I am also getting same error message when try to access wp-admin folder.

    Anyone any ideas please as have re-installed, created databases, and then removed both about 4 times now and beginning to have a sense of humour failure.

    Many thanks

    Gus

    Gus,

    Your .htaccess file looks good. Have you checked into the Apache mod_rewrite module? I'm assuming your server is Linux-based. If not, pleas let me know.

    Gus,

    I searched A2 Hosting's forums and they do say they support mod_rewrite, so no worries there.

    Have you checked file permissions on everything?

    Yes - spoken with A2 and they have said that:

    When going to your http://forces2canaries.co.uk/wp-admin page I am redirected to the following url:

    http://forces2canaries.co.uk/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fforces2canaries.co.uk%2Fwp-admin%2F

    Have no idea how or where to change this

    Have checked thefile permissions and all seem okay.

    PS - The links are no longer valid as have taken the files down for the time being.

    The reason I asked about hosting is that there are at least two shared hosts that disable WPMU installs if you don't have the right package/dedicated IP / add-ons/ whatever criteria they decide. And this login redirect is one way they cripple MU.

    You may want to just ask your web host support to check.

    Many thanks Andrea - and have checked. Was running WPMU up until last Thursday with no problems (had had it in use fo about 6 months) had upgraded tothe latest version through the plugins upgrade and all was running brilliantly.

    Uploaded the new BuddyPress last week, and encountered major errors with database. After three days of pulling my hair out etc I decided to go for a complete 'clean' install and now cant even login or access the admin area on the new install.

    I'd say something got missed.

    Good to have more info though. It would have helped at the top of the thread. :)

    Hello and thank you to everyone for your responce. I ended up installing in root directory and it fixed all my problems. : )
    I have a standard WordPress account installed in the main directory and I think somehow when I installed MU in a subdirectory it was pulling from the wrong wp-config file.
    The login screen did not look like the wp login screen at all. I believe I am good now as far as the install goes! I still have some questions but should probably start a new thread or look to see if it has already been addressed by someone else.

    THANKS AGAIN!!

    Ah, yes. Having WordPress and WordPress MU installed like that are known to cause errors.

    Hello I have the same problem. I have the install done, got the email that MU is sucessfully installed but cannot login. I checked the .httaccess file mod_rewrite is turned on. File permission are also ok

    I've chosen not subdomain but subfolders. My login page http://www.svmi.ru/wp-login.php is without CSS if I login comes the message of the browser can't connect to the server. The main page is also not available.

    Do you have a clue what it could be? I have no other wordpress installs at that hosting account.

    When you did the install, did you give the site URL as http://www.svmi.ru or svmi.ru?

    Thank you tim.moore you helped me a lot. The DNS reords of http://www.svmi.ru haven't been right setup at my hosting the http://svmi.ru would always been reditrected at http://www.svmi.ru but MU uses as URL http://svmi.ru. So I did it the other way around that http://www.svmi.ru is redirected at http://svmi.ru. Now everthing works.
