Install WP-MU with WP-2.8.5 (11 posts)

I am already running my WP blogs at http://www.xyz.com. I was thinking that after the WP-MU installation at http://blogs.xyz.com my users which already register with http://www.xyz.com (already WP 2.8.5 running blog) will be able to access http://blogs.xyz.com (WP-MU) with their same user name and password but it seems totally different two bloging platforms.

I want to connect WP-MU (new) with my WP 2.8.5 (already running wordpress) where my register user can assess both WP-MU and WP 2.8.5 with same login name and pwsswords.

Do I need to install WP-MU in root directory with my WP 2.8.5 http://www.xyz.com or WP-MU will work in subdomain with my root directory?

    or

Do I need to remove WP 2.8.5 and install WP-MU in my root direcotry http://www.xyz.com and transfer my previous posts from WP-2.8.5 to WP MU?

    thanks

That's what you should do. Make sure to back up your database and files before you remove anything, though.

You want to say that we cant run WP-MU and WP together in root directory http://www.xyz.com/ (same user name and pws)? After the removel of WP-2.8.5 I will install WP-MU but how can I transfer my 200 posts from WP's DB to WP-MU DB? because I think WP-MU 2.7.1 database structure is different than WP 2.8.5.

"because I think WP-MU 2.7.1 database structure is different than WP 2.8.5. "

Not really. Also, why 2.7.1 for MU? The current MU release is 2.8.4, right here on the download page.

"how can I transfer my 200 posts from WP's DB to WP-MU DB? "

Go to the Tools menu, pick the Export tab. Set up MU. Then go to the Tools menu and pick the Import tab.

Are you familiar with phpmyadmin? It might be quicker to do a backup/restore that way.

Main problem with Wordpress MU, it is very difficult to configure and its not user friendly like WP personally I don't like WP-MU. I removed WP and install WP-MU and I am trying to transfer images including thumbnails from WP to WP-MU. I can see images in my WP-MU posts but thumbnails are not showing at my website. When I explore my media option in wordpress-MU I found nothing even my images which I can see in my posts except wordpress.2009-11-06.xml5.txt type files.

I don't know how can I transfer my images including thumbnails from WP into WP-MU.

wp and wpmu are virtually the same. There are just some slight differences to learn about the administration and how to handle users. What you want can be achieved with wpmu.

If you don't want to mess with phpmyadmin then I suggest that you export users with the tool/export the file from your xyz blog.

Then install mu in the root as the xyz blog. Then import from your export file and include all attachments.

In your wpmu use the site admin to add users manually from your existing blog.

You can then assign them to any blog that you want them on.

I phpmyadmin is the way to go for you then do the following:

copy all posts, comments, terms, taxanomy, over to the blog id 1 of your wpmu installation.

Click on proprties on a broken image that's not uploaded on your mu website. These are the images from the original xyz.blog. Then you can see where you need to copy the images to.

Sorry, this is likely too long and confusing. I am trying to help and mu will do exactly what you want it too but there are just a lot of steps and knowledge of how mu handles users and things.

Perhaps, in someway this will help someone.

It was brought to my attention that signature links aren't allowed on this forum. I am sorry. I turned off the signature link on my iphone. I didn't think about it.
