Wordpress MU on MediaTemple Showing WSOD on Sub-Blogs (19 posts)

    Hello All,

    I've got an issue that I think may be a setting on my host that is wrong.

    I just switched my hosting account from HostGator Shared server to MediaTemple's Grid-server service.

    I moved over one WPMU/Buddypress install without issue (no-domain mapping/sub-directory install). I moved over two standalone WP installs without incident.

    But, I'm having an issue with my last (and most important) set of sites.

    The domain http://www.nlightonline.com is the main blog for my WPMU install. The main page shows up fine. However I have these errors that I need to fix:

    1) all sub-pages on main blog display a 404 error. (ex: http://nlightonline.com/features) - these pages show up fine in the backend pages editor.

    2) all sub-blogs show the WSOD (both pages with a mapped domain and those without).

    Examples:
    -http://cdmmy.nlightonline.com -->> mapped to -->> http://clothdiaperingmommy.com
    -http://mml2.nlightonline.com -->> mapped to -->> http://monetizemylife.com
    -http://mytweet.nlightonline.com -->> not mapped

    3) I have the OpenGoo Project manager installed at http://projects.nlightonline.com. For some reason this project manager is also showing up completely blank and I think it may be related to my sub-domian issue with WPMU, but I do not know how.

    Here's A short Video shocasing the problem if that helps anyone:

    Also, I don't know if this would make a difference, but I had a dedicated IP address over at HostGator, I do not have this at MediaTemple. Again the reason I don't think this would be the issue is because of the other WPMU website that I've got running fine on their service with out the dedicate IP address.

    NOTE: The IonCube Loader Issues that shows in the video I attached has been fixed and the issue remains.

    WSOD is always always always an error. Either you missed a theme or a plugin. Or, in the move, some stuff got reset. Find the error logs first thing. I can't remember offhand, you may have to go turn them on under the Logs menu. then hit the site again to generate the error to write it to the logs.

    "all sub-pages on main blog display a 404 error. "

    mod-rewrite may be installed ont he server, but not enabled for that new web account. Support can fix it. (or they should be able to)

    Hey Andrea,

    You're amazing if no one's told you lately. You are so active on these forums helping people. I really hope the word of wordpress users knows how much they have been blessed by your knowledge and activity. Thanks!

    Anyhow, this is pure n00b... how do I turn on error logging in WordpressMU, I can't seem to find any settings on the back end to do so?

    Thanks again.

    I'VE HAD A BREAKTHROUGH!!!

    Sadly - I still have a problem. I've narrowed down my problem to Doncha Domain Mapping plugin.

    I worked a few plugins around and fixed a broken theme and now all of my sub-domain blogs show up... that is all of the sub-domain blogs that aren't domain mapped to another domain.

    Let me clarify. The Hompage of each un-domain mapped sub-blog shows up. Any other pages/posts shows up with a 404 error - still waiting for mod_rewrite to be turned on my support staff. I assume that will fix that error.

    So -
    Main Blog: http://nlightonline.com - working fine, minus the mod_rewrite that I'm waiting for support to turn on.

    Un-Domain Mapped Sub-Blogs (all test sites for various things) -
    http://mml.nlightonline.com/
    http://help.nlightonline.com/
    http://mytweet.nlightonline.com/
    http://rwm.nlightonline.com/
    http://test5.nlightonline.com/

    Each of these are working properly - minus the 404 errors on pages/posts. Mod_rewrite should fix

    Domain Mapped Blogs (All Serious Blogs that must have their own domain) -
    http://familyblog.nlightonline.com/ -->> mapped to -->> http://matthewsfamilyblog.com
    http://photo.nlightonline.com/ -->> mapped to -->> http://nlightphoto.com
    http://marketing.nlightonline.com -->> mapped to -->> http://nlightmarketing.com
    http://mml2.nlightonline.com -->> mapped to -->> http://monetizemylife.com
    http://cdmmy.nlightlonlince.com -->> mapped to -->> http://clothdiaperingmommy.com

    Some things of note:

    -All domains have had their A-Records updated more than 48Hrs ago to the new server's IP address. Both with and without www.

    -When you type one of the sub-domains into browser address bar (ie - cdmmy.nlighonline.com) it is being redirected by WPMU to the appropriate domain (ie - clothediaperingmommy.com).

    -I can access the backend of each blog by navigating to sub.domain.com/wp-admin, but I cannot get to the backend by navigating to mappeddomain.com/wp-admin.

    -On sub.domain blogs images aren't showing up. Example: http://mml.nlightonline.com/files/2009/08/Picture-15.png when typed into address bar gives file not found error - Yet those files are in the appropriate directories when checked with FTP.

    UPDATE:

    Got Mod_Rewrite turned on and working properly. This fixed the issues of pages/posts not showing and images not being loaded properly.

    Domain mapped blogs still showing up WSOD.

    Have you foudn the error logs yet? WSOD = errors. Always. Although I have yet to see the domain mapping plugin itself bork things...

    Andrea I think I figured it out.

    The WPMU install I'm working with here isn't installed at my web root folder. It's installed in a sub-folder.

    The web-root is MFCommunity.com - a buddypress site.

    nLightOnline.com is in a sub-folder on my host. I assume this means that when I point my domain to the IP address using an A-Record, the domain is being passed to the WPMU install at the web-root... and it has no idea what to do with it.

    On my sites, when I remove the mapped domain from the back-end. The blog shows up perfectly. Example: http://mml2.nlightonline.com works great when I don't tell WMPU to map it to http://www.monetizemylife.com.

    Any Ideas?

    "this means that when I point my domain to the IP address using an A-Record, the domain is being passed to the WPMU install at the web-root... and it has no idea what to do with it."

    Yep, that's exactly what's going on.

    Instead of the A record, you'll have to use a CNAME record to map the domain to the right MU install.

    Hey Andrea,

    I've Got a CNAME record set up for MonetizeMyLife.com -

    Here's Proof of propogation from What'sMyDNS.com - http://skitch.com/foodin65/nehca/whats-my-dns-global-dns-propagation-checker

    Here's the set-up for the cname at Joker.com -
    http://skitch.com/foodin65/nehpc/domain-name-registration-at-joker.com-easy-to-use-control-panel-and-reseller-api-interface

    Here's the WP backend setting for domain mapping showing that the domain is indeed set up properly in the back on Wordpress - http://skitch.com/foodin65/nehp1/domain-mapping-monetizemylife-2.0-wordpress

    And yet, the blog is still blank when I add the domain mapping. If I delete "monetizemylife.com" from the Domain Mapping Settings page... the blog shows up fine. So, I'm curious - what I'm doing wrong with my Domain Mapping setting that wordpress mu doesn't know what to show?

    The DNS for MonetizeMyLife.com hasn't completely propagated yet. I get no DNS records for it at all. Full propagation takes up to 72 hours.

    It keeps redirecting to the www for me. Gotta take that out.

    You only have the DNS set up for http://www.monetizemylife.com and not monetizemylife.com. MU is redirecting the www to the non www which your browser can't find. That gives you the WSOD.

    I'm having the same problem. I have domains mapped to one WPMU install. The home pages work though I'm unable to get to the pages or posts. mod_rewrite is enabled. All DNS records have been filled a month or so ago.

    If using WPMU to host multiple sites with multiple domains, how should the CNAME record be filled out? Should the CNAME record point to an IP address (in lieu of the A-record, as per the plugin instructions)?

    And does a CNAME record need to be filled out such that both http://www.domain2.com and domain2.com point to the IP address of the WPMU install rather than domain2.com?

    You can't put an IP address in a CNAME record. Put in the main domain of the MU site.

    So it should read:

    domain2.com/* CNAME domain1.com
    http://www.domain2.com CNAME domain1.com
    *.domain2.com CNAME domain1.com

    Would the virtual host file accomplish the same thing if I'm on VPS?

    I have the virtual domains (domain2.com, http://www.domain2.com and *.domain2.com set to the document root for domain1. Should I add a domain2.com/* entry?

    Thanks!

    @WMPUGURU,

    If I understand you I need a CNAME record that points both 'www.domain.com' & 'domain.com' to 'www.WPMUInstall.com'. Correct?

    I can't add a CNAME record with out the "www". So how do i Point the '[empty].domain.com' to 'www.WPMUInstall.com' if I must have something in the sub-domain field?

    Make 2 CNAME records

    domain.com
    http://www.domain.com
