Is it possible to install WPMU on shared hosting where I can't update the apache config files?

A good number of people have WPMU installed on a shared hosting account. If you search the forums you'll also find several threads filled with recommended hosting providers. :)

OK, I have an existing plan with hostgator, which is a standard cpanel shared host. I found a few people saying they did it, but none explaining how. does anyone know how to do this?

I'm guessing most hosts won't allow you to do anything to you apache config in a shared environment... I use http://www.siteground.com and I must say that they are awesome in providing support... wihin 15 minutes my DNS wildcard was set up... (same goes for any other support issues)!!

WE WANT MORE!!! (Friendly webhosts that is ;)

If you have WHM access of CPanel, you can do the wildcard yourself. The bit that goes into http.conf still has to be done by the webhost though.

Do note though that you should talk to your host about the situation though if you're on Shared Hosting. Most TOS/AUPs do not allow reselling or providing websites to others on a shared account.

    I guess I'm a lucky guy ;)

...except for the part on WHM access but the quick support fixed that!
