Embedding Blip.tv videos (7 posts)

We are migrating an existing WP video blog site to WPMU, and are concerned with how to ensure existing and future videos play correctly.

The videos are hosted on Blip.tv, and embed 1-2 per week on the site. Moving to WPMU will allow the customer to offer Premium (paying) members to do the same.

Our question is this: what's the best way to enable embedded video on a WPMU site? Suggested plugings and example sites are appreciated.

    Thank You

    Thank you glossljc!

Looks like we've got some work to do in figuring out how to use this. Do you have a site we can view it working on?

    Thanks again

The WordPress Video Plugin is nice for adding lots of shortcodes. But the downside to just shortcodes is that users need to know what they are. We use Viper's Video Quicktags which does both shortcode and also adds buttons to the editor so that people can just click the button, paste the url into the box that pops up, and then it inserts the shortcode for them.

It doesn't handle as many video hosts, but it does support bliptv.

If your existing wp site just had straight embed code pasted in to the articles, MU will strip that out (object embedding is a potential security risk for mass hosted sites). To convert them to shortcode, what I would probably do is either export the site xml or do a full sql dump then do a regex to find the occurences of the embed, parse out the URL, then insert it as an appropriate shortcode for whatever video plugin you choose.

What kgraeme said. Plus, Viper's Video Quicktags will be incorporated into core WP 2.9 soon so the transition from plugin to using regular links would be easy.

Good point. WordPress 2.9 does introduce new embedding features, so it would probably be best to look at making the embeds compatible with that.

And actually, while Viper did write the new oEmbed features for 2.9, it's different than his Video Quicktags plugin. In particular, 2.9 doesn't add the TinyMCE buttons. But he did mention that he's planning on reworking the Video Quicktags plugin to act as a UI enhancement to his oEmbed features in 2.9.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We did install the Viper plugin, and it works well. Curious if anyone has used it with Windows Live Writer?
