Following same installation as wp 1.5.2, fill in site name and my mail address, It showed me that when I linked to log in page:
Database Tables Missing.
The table danny_wp::wp_site is missing. Delete the .htaccess file and run the installer again!
after I got the password.
But actuallyI am sure the wp_site table is do exist in my DB!!!
*The version I download is "wpmu-2005-08-19".
I have the exactly same problem. Anybody knows why is it happening???
my version now is wpmu-2005-08-26

use the unstable version.
it is the unstable version!

modify the wp_blogs table,add "/" to the path in "path" column, the refresh your web.
