I started getting the 404 Error pages on the "Hello World" and all the other pages in all the test blogs that I've opened using my MU installation. It didn't happen before, and I havnt change anything so it is kinda strange.

- Check the webserver's error logs.
- Make sure your htaccess file is there and actually has content in there.
- Get with your host and see if they've changed anything with the box you sit on.

ooops, It seems like I accidently erased my htaccess file. how can I retrieve it?
try downloading wpmu again and take the included .htaccess file - I hope you did not make any changes as those are lost now...
except if you have a backup system working and accessible for you, in that case, restore the file :-)

I tried downloading it again but there doesnt seem to be a file like this among the wordpress-mu-1.1.1.zip files.
there is a file called htaccess.dist however. is that the one?
That's the one. It has to be edited though for your own install.
Are you sure you don't have a backup?

I guess I don't have a backup. is there a custom way to edit that file? (I don't have anything important on my mu installation - it's still fresh.. so there shouldn't be to much unique data in the htacces file to be lost..
The only major change in that case is the RewriteBase. if you're WPMu install is within the root of the domain, just change BASE/ to /
