I posted a bug found in WPMU in trac a few weeks back. Is it possible to just fix it myself?
The fix I have tested on my local installation and it seems to work correctly.
If it is possible, how do I go about checking out and checking in files?

Most of just screw around with our own code without issue.
I would just suggest copy and paste the fix within your install and make note as to what files you change and how you did it. I've got trac installed myself on one of my own boxes and we're working out a method of using it to keep our own installs updated from it but that's something we're doing inhouse.
You'd have to deal with SVN and all that if you want to do trac for yourself. There are a couple of free trac hosts out there. A google search turns up a list of them if you're interested.
