mark as spam, delete, or both? (7 posts)

    A simple question:

Site Admin > Blogs shows all the recent splogs. I have the option to select and "mark as spam," which does not delete, or to "delete" instead of mark as spam.

I'm wondering which is best for dealing with splogs and spam user.

Specifically, if I "mark as spam," am I adding to any db of spammers and thus contributing to the community?

Or am I simply telling my install that this is spam?

What's the benefit, in short, of "mark as spam" instead of mere "delete"?

    Thank you :)

Here's my take. I suggest Mark as Spam. It's a toss up though and something you need to deside for yourself.

    Mark as spam:

+ Shows that you're hard on spammers
+ gets google juice since those spammers are going to link to the site. (Aside: Go in and add in a link back to your main site to that error code.)
+ Agrees with ploicy of not reusing urls if you have one.

    - You're stuck with the 8 database tables. That may be an issue for you.
    - Wasted url.
    - users bitch about not being able to use those urls.

    Delete:
+ Gets rid of the database tables
+ End users can reuse the url if it's a popular one.
+ End users have ready made inbounds from other sites
    - Spammers can reuse the url
    - No evidense of your spam policies
    - End users have ready spammy inbounds and may complain about such.

What does marking as spam do to a blog/user? Does it "de-list" it from site listings - and can that blog be used, or does it freeze it?

    It de-lists and freezes it.

    Thanks drmiketemp,

I have over 10 spam blogs on my site so I guess it's better to delete them, saving some hundreds of tables.

    :(

    edit: Only 10. Wow.
