is there maybe a way to get the theme editor work only for the site admin, i.e. the main blog admin GUI?

    This one should do it:

Seem to work only for PHP5, not PHP4

I have PHP5 but it doesn't seem to work. If I enable all blogs for editing it stil shows me a warning page that I can't edit... does it only work on sub-domains maybe? I am using sub directories for blogs.

Yep, edit the theme-editr.php to include the "if site_admin" call. I copied it out of anothe rfile.

Doesn't show up on the menu anywhere, even if you are admin, but type the url in and it shows up.

You have to modify (I think) wp-admin/menu-header.php to get the file to show up. I believe it's commented out in there.
