A client of mine is contemplating a community site where users could add subdomain sites. He also wants the users to be able to contribute information/pages and know-how to a general part of the site in a wiki. Is there an existing plugin that allows for people contributing to docs and checking pages in/out? That sort of thing?

My two cents. Probably worth that much ;) MU is right for the subdomain part of the requirements. I don't think it is right for the wiki and doc management requirements. Systems like Joomla or Drupal are better options for those kinds of things. Drupal has some nice doc management features.
I've used Drupal, but I'm wondering if you have any suggestions then on how to do both the subdomains and the doc management/wiki? Run WordpressMU and something else both somehow?
