I want the www. prefix in my blog url. How do I do it? (12 posts)

I'm running the multi user version of wordpress on Apache.

I want to have the www. prefix in my blog url.

Every time I try to access the site using the www. domain prefix, it redirects to the non-www-prefixed url (http://mydomain.com/blogs instead of http://www.mydomain.com/blogs.

I've already searched here looking for a solution to this, and it seems that no one has been able to get it to work.

I DID include the "www." prefix as part of the domain name during the installation.

I DID try commenting out those couple of lines in the index-install.php file (which was suggested in this seemingly dead end thread: http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=5752&page&replies=23) - but that didn't work either.

Why is this so complicated to achieve? How can I make it happen? It's my understanding that modifying the .htaccess file ISN'T necessary -- that it's only suggested.

The non-multi user version of wordpress does not have this strange limitation, and I'm uncertain as to why the muti-user version does. How do I get around it?

    Thanks,
    - Yvan

read the htacces file, that's where it's getting stripped.

you dont really need. domain.com is better than http://www.domain.com especially if you are hosting people's blogs.
    You will only complicate things

    especially with future releases.

There's no harm is advertising your site with the www. prefix if you're worried that people won't realise xxx.com is a website without it. (Yes, there are many many people who think a website URL must have the www. prefix before it)
When people visit they'll be redirected to the non-www version but they'll hardly know. Most people won't even notice.

I hate www. with a vengeance but I have one client who will insist that people won't know it's a website address if it doesn't have the www. infront of it.

Even if the site is at a sub-domain such as blog.test.com, he insists that it must be advertised as http://www.blog.test.com so I have to start messing around with DNS cnames and virtual hosts so that both address will resolve.

Even though as soon as the www. address is entered it will redirect to the none www. version we've had no complaints or confusion so far.

Despite all this, he has no trouble typing maps.google.com into his browser and checking to see how many of his neighbours have swimming pools.

i hate too the www prefix, it is stupid, but is much more stupid to not give the freedom to choose.

yesterday, a client didn't understand why I charged so much for building her websites if there are free WYSIWYG editors out there. She even pronounced it right. I was impressed.

oh, and i deleted the 'u' in the quote. I'm from the Southern US, it hurt my hand to paste that with a 'u' in it.
