Which one. I'm using (mt) gs service and it works fine... most of the time:) But I suggest You purchase dedicated server. It's a better solution.

I have ixweb. But i read that It will be installed fine without the edit of httpd.conf file, but i'll have to use sub-dir's.
    is ok?

Even subdirectory mode requires modification of httpd.conf, although for subdomains it takes more.

MU is server level software, which essentially turns you into a web host by hosting blogs.

It tends to violate many shared hosts TOS, typically by one of the following common clauses:

    a) It allows you to "give out" accounts to other people.
    b) Excessive resource usage.
    c) Excessive file counts (typically in the database).

There are other wordings out there, but those are the most common.

MU just isn't made to be run through shared hosting, if used as designed.

Not that people don't get away with it for a while, some do. But if you're going to host peoples blogs, and provide a reputable service, doing so isn't going to be able to be done on the cheap.

    So:
I can do it, but is not the best way?

Yes, you can. I use http://synhosting.com. There are on the list of recommended hosts at http://wpmudevorg.wordpress.com and I've been happy with them and their level of support. They also offer wildcard DNS which is a requirement of MU.

For starting out, you can squeak by with a shared host.

Get many blogs, much traffic, or a combination thereof and you'll be moving to proper hardware.

better listen to this boys, i'm one to tell ya. IF you get a host to allow a wildcard, you'll prolly get away with issue A a) It allows you to "give out" accounts to other people.

But issue #B will kick your arse. RESOURCES. I've had to scrub plugins and other cool stuff because they hit the DB too hard or run for longer than 30 seconds (which wasn't stated against in my TOS, but it gets me suspended all the time). I had a really cool theme that loaded *avatars, latests this and thats, but it was so resource intensive that I got knocked down ever day for 6 days. no lie.

If you somehow manage to get away with A and B, try using your cPanel backup scripts to create a complete backup. go ahead. try it. c) Excessive file counts (typically in the database). you'll have to make do with DB backups... and in the event that you fat-finger something (laugh) and delete an important file, it's gone. my files change weekly, so I need complete backups AT LEAST once a week. but my host doesn't even give me the option to ftp a backup of my home directory because it's too large. thats why i'm moving to futurehosting.biz as soon as I feel comfortable with VPS. I don't plan to stop there, I plan to be on my own box within 6 months.

much better to pay the cost early on. believe it.

This is my first experience with WPMU and with web hosting. It's pretty vanilla, incomplete, and no one is on there yet. It is on Hostmonster. Try it out and see if it breaks.

The CPanel says you can do daily and weekly backups. Haven't seen anything about limitations.

    "Haven't seen anything about limitations."

Look in your hosts TOS and the fine print.

My Mu is on hostmonster - true, the option is there in cPanel. But once your mu gets about 300+ users who podcast, videocast, etc, clicking that link will take you to a screen that explains that your home directory is too large to be downloaded. I see it everyday, every day I click it thinking it'll let me do it and every day i'm wrong. the only way around it is with cron. but then you have to pay real close attention because after a week of dailies, your directory will have doubled by double and you'll get a nasty email.

listen to Andrea, she has a great story to tell about Mu and hosts.

I'd go atleast VPS, but shoot for dedicated if you can.

I know I should be one to talk because i'm not on VPS but we aren't talking about me, we are talking about you.

Luckily I don't anticipate that many users or allowing podcasting and videocasting. Unless I was charging for it and then I would go dedicated.

I don't see anything really unreasonable in there that would prohibit hobbyists from using WPMU.

Therefore, the only difference is that when I install mu, I do not modify the httpd.conf file?

I checked out synhosting. I see an option for a business plan at abut $20/month. Not a VPN or anything liek that to be found. If this the plan that is recommended for Wpmu?

I'm really in a bind for time as my site is out right now.
