Initial login failing; can't change admin password (12 posts)

Just downloaded MU 1.5.1 a little while ago, and I can't log in after the installation completes. I've tried it with both the subdomain and the subdirectory option, in case that was the problem, but in both cases I'm endlessly redirected to the login page. I've tried having it email me a new password, but the email is never sent. I've also tried overwriting the admin user's password in the database with the MD-5 option on, as I've done with standard WP blogs in the past, but that didn't work either.

I'm developing this site locally, and have done dozens of standard WP installs without a hitch, but this is my first attempt with MU. If it matters, I'm using name-based virtual hosts, such that I just type http://mydomain/ into my browser.

    Would hugely appreciate any guidance!

Ah! I wasn't seeing any error messages, but after navigating elsewhere and returning to the login page, I'm now getting the following errors:

    ERROR: Incorrect password.
ERROR: Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser. You must enable cookies to use WordPress.

Needless to say, the password is correct, and cookies are supported by my browser (and not blocked).

You have to use a FQDN. mydomain isn't formatted as such. It has no extension.

Therefore, cookies are never set, can't be retrieved, etc., so on, and so forth.

That line in the install warning against this just isn't catching a lot.

No, it's not Andrea. It's not catching IP's either.

I didn't see a warning at all. I did see a forum post about not using IPs.

    Thanks, everyone.

Hmmm. I just did a subfolder install in a subfolder (yeah, I know...) and it's doing the same thing with the admin password & login.

I'll try and remember to update when I find out what happens.

    Thanks lunabyte,

I had the same problem at my local machine, http://preynolds/sandbox/wpmu/

I changed my URL to http://preynolds.int.myinternaldomain.com/sandbox/wpmu/ and everything works so far.

    Thanks!

    You're welcome.

Although for testing purposes, you can use your hosts file to your advantage, and shorten up the domain a tick. :)
