so i drop all the plugin files into ./wp-content/mu-plugins and they're automatically activated. so what is the ./wp-content/plugins for? isn't there a plugin management page like in the standalone wordpress?

    No, Yes, Plugins and Yes.

The plugins that you want automatically activated system side and are MU compatible should go in the mu-plugins directory.
The other plugins go in the wp-content/plugins directory and can be activated on a blog by blog basis using the plugins menu.

You may have to turn the per-blog plugin tab on in your site admin settings.
