Share posts across blogs? (8 posts)

Hey, all -- I'm trying to figure out if WPMU is the right way to do what I'm trying to do, or if I should use plain ol' WordPress.

I want to set up a company Web site where each of our departments has its own section that its employees can maintain.

I thought I would use WPMU, and give each department a "blog" that would serve as a content management system, all under a single roof.

But one thing they'll need to do is share posts across blogs. That is, I'd like to create categories that pull content from every blog.

For example, if both the marketing and professional standards departments put out press releases (i.e., posts in the "Press Release" category), the "Press Releases" category on the main page should pull in both of them.

Can WPMU do this? If two blogs have the same category names, can some sort of main blog have access to both of them? Or are they completely separate entities that just happen to have the same name?

Essentially, I need visitors to be able to go straight to the marketing department's page, or show all items in a particular category across departments (e.g., press releases).

I thought about using WordPress for this, with each department having its own category, but WP's permissions system would allow people from one department to make changes to another department's stuff, and I wanted to avoid that.

I hope this makes sense. Is it possible?

    Thanks!

You'd be better off using regular Wordpress, categories and a theme that does what you want. Use Roles to prevent users from making changes to posts they don't own and changes to the site.

    Makes sense -- thanks!

Will Roles let me say, "You can only edit your own posts" or "You can only edit posts in this category"?

yep, it does most of what you want but you can extend and fine tune it with some additional plugin called "role scope sniper" or similar - don't have a link handy go google, you'll find it.

    Hi all,
I've just started digging through the documentation for MU and Hive but I'm not sure if either of them will work for what I want to do...

Much like Andrew, I'd like to unique content from a pool of common data.

In more detail I'd like to use
    - http://www.jordancartwright.com as a platform for professional information and a links to my other projects. This would be the main DB and have the capability to display all articles I write from now on.
    - http://www.dromedary.ca as my photography site
    ---www.abcproject.com as project A
    ---www.defproject.com as project B
    --- etc..

I'd like the project sites to pull articles from the first DB based on specific categories or tags.

With this in mind, it doesn't seem like either of the above options are exactly what I need.

There is the lyceum project which touts this capability (http://lyceum.ibiblio.org/) but it appears to be on the verge of extinction.

Is there any reason why I can't just "point" a couple of different wordpress installations at the same database, and then control each instance to display based on specific categories or tags??

Or has this capability been added in the last 8 months??
Any thoughts would be appreciated, I'm fairly new at wordpress and building some sort of custom functionality isn't really an option at this point.. :0/

why not try rss agregators? there are some really good ones out there or isn't that exactly what you had in mind?

    i.e. http://projects.radgeek.com/feedwordpress or http://devthought.com/wp-o-matic-the-wordpress-rss-agreggator/

    uh, yeah.

    Set up MU.
get the doamin mapping plugin and make each sub-blog your extra domains.
Put the sitewide tags plugin on blog a. It will grab everything from the other blogs, but then you can control what you want to show via the theme - just like you would for a single WP blog.

Search still looks like it's grabbing old threads, because we've discussed this quite a bit lately.
