I am trying to insert a youtube video into my post, but for some reason every time I click "submit" the "object" element and all its child elements are removed from the page. Why??

A quick search shows a number of previous threads on the topic. End users being able to add in their own embed codes would be a security risk.

WPMU strips out all kinds of tags. You need a video plugin or youtube plugin to allow it to be in the posts.
Which, as noted above, has been discussed a lot.
