Install both Wordpress and Wordpress MU (7 posts)

Is it possible to install Wordpress MU in a subdirectory (example.com/blogs) while having wordpress 2.6 running at root directory.

I am doing this for testing out Wordpress MU.

Unfortunately, the install process is not working well for Wordpress MU. I have so far found out that I have to remove wp-config.php (at least for a few minutes) from the root directory to even start the installation process.

Currently I am getting a 500 error when trying to log in (I enter in my name and password and it leads to a 500 error). (I was only able to finish the installation part until login).

Obviously, I have gotten wordpress 2.6 on my site to work, so it seems like installing wpmu should work.

Is there anything else I need to know (like the removing wp-config.php trick)?

    Thanks!

Not surprised your WPMU test in subdirectory folder not working. WPMU test in subdomain works well.

So.. the front page of MU looks fine, just gives an error when you login?

Actually, the front page of MU does not look fine as well.

    So here's exactly what happened:
I put in wpmu on to a subdirectory: example.com/blogs. I created a new database for it. Then I loaded up the subdirectory, and the "No WPMU site defined on this host" error popped up.

After searching through the forums, I found that disabling wp-config.php in the root directory may help in making that error message disappear. I did that, the error message disappeared. Then the installation process appeared on /blogs/.

I filled out the user, database, passwd, etc... and clicked submit. It said Congratulations, and gave me a password. That is as far as I have gotten.

Now on every page on wpmu (except /blogs/wp-login.php) the same error shows up:

    "500 Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the site administrator and inform them of the time the error occured and anything you might have done that may have caused the error."

Also, when I login, that error comes up also.

I checked the tables created in the database- and they are correct.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
Possibly incorrect htaccess file? Any ideas would be helpful.

mercime, have you gotten the wpmu for subdomains to work on a site already hosting wp 2.x?

I am assuming for that you have to install wpmu on the root directory?

I'm guessing that the file permissions on the install may have been changed or are off.

The htacess only deals with rewriting the permalinks etc.

If those permissiosn look right, and the generated htaccess file and wp-config file are fine, then it's your server/host. you'll have to install WPMU on a separate web account. on some setups on shared hosts, it's rather impossible for mu to be anyplace other than the root.

@decision: installed 3 WPMU's for an organization per requirements.
    - All installs used subdirectory structure
    1) in http://www.example.org - /deptA , /deptB , etc.
    2) in http://staff.example.org - /project1 , /project2 , etc
    3) in http://volunteers.example.org - /AK , /CA , etc
I did recommend using EE instead, but they preferred interface of WordPress :-)

But never installed WPMU in a subfolder like http://example.org/WPMU with single WordPress at root.
