use sub-directories instead of sub-domains. (9 posts)

Ok so here's the deal I'm building a site at the moment (which has the possibility of becoming quite large) but I realized that my host only supports up to 100 sub domains, so if it grew to more than 100 users then I'd be stuffed, so I have 2 questions.

    1) Can I make it use sub-directories instead?
    2) Will the sub domains count to my limit?

Any help is a appreciated :)

    1) Yes, reinstall it and pick the subfolder option

    2) no they don't. They are *wildcard* subdomains, so if your host will let you do that, it means *anything* at your domain goes through. They are virtual, remember.

Not easily. There's a could of folks here who have written scripts that will do this but none of them have offered them for release.

Only real method would be to do a reinstall.

Will the sub domains count to my limit?

That's really a question for your host but no host that I know of with such a limit in place is going to allow you to do a wildcard as that gets around their limits.

To be honest though, I'd be looking for a new host. Usually when hosts place such a limit, they're not going to be very happy to see the amount of resources used by mu.

If they don't count then everything is ok, that was my only concern really, thanks :)

EDIT: I'm on mediatemple so I'm not considering switching host too soon ;)

I have another question. Is there a way to limit a user to having only one blog?

The only thing it says you can change later is the blog NAME. :)
