I am just getting to the final stages of moving a wpmu 2.6.5 blog to a vps from shared hosting for the first time, everything is in place, the files are uploaded to the new space, the db is ready, but getting an error in connecting to db which i'm trying to resolve right now in the wp-config.php.

i am just wondering, do i keep the old .htaccess and wp-config.php? if the new db is setup correctly in the wp-config.php should i expect the site to run on the new host ip from the off or do i need to go through the initial wpmu installation again (which is what i see if i remove the .htaccess and wp-config files from the public_html

i'm hoping that the site will run as normal on the new ip with just the changes to the wp-config and of course dns - is there anything that i may have missed out or could anyone who has done the same before let me know of any important tips in transferring the wpmu site to a new vps host successfully.
