I filled in the database details etc at /index.php and hit submit.
I get:
Warning: step2(wp-includes/wp-db.php) [function.step2]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/sites/coastalnet.co.uk/public_html/index-install.php on line 458
Fatal error: step2() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'wp-includes/wp-db.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/pear') in /home/sites/coastalnet.co.uk/public_html/index-install.php on line 458

Got the file index-install.php in the root directory?
Checked permissions?

Index-install is in the route. What must the permissions be?

and 0644 for the files within the root.
What should it be?

Try setting 777 for public_html dir (or whatever your web dir is) and run the install. Change perms back after installation :)

Changed to 777 and now get:
A file permissions error has occurred. Please check the permissions on the script and the directory it is in and try again.
I have also changed index and index install to 777. Still get message when trying to access index.

What about owner of these files/dirs?
oh god, I have a premonition that he uploaded by FTP and now the FTp user owns it all, while the web server has no rights :-(

I did use an ftp program, but not as an ftp user. Direct ftp.

I had no chmod issues before I made changes to the permissions. The error I was getting was "failed to connect to database".
I'm going to reset the server space, upload files again and try once more.
Any tips will be happily accepted.
Make sure you clear out the Database too
if you upload via ftp files are owned by the ftp user you used to upload. that is in most cases not the same user the web server runs as...

I will be uploading using ftp.domain.com.
I won't be setting up a seperate ftp user. Does this cause issues?
well, when using FTP usually you need to authenticate with user/password - that user then owns the files.

basically you can use ssh but ftp is also fine, we'll just need a little more info on this issue because setting the permissions to 777 that makes it word-writable and though highly insecure it should work. check this link out, maybe that helps you a bit understanding this: http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/filepermissions.html

This is tricky for a newbe like me!
I think I will have to pay somebody to do it.
well, its not as complicated but you'll have to learn the basics first if you are on a linux host
