MU Install Not Creating Tables (5 posts)

Greetings, all... I'm encountering an issue which may actually force me to bash my own brain in. ;)

Yesterday afternoon, I set out to create yet another WP-based site only this time, the goal was to use WPMU.

I install WP sites quite regularly so, without thinking, I uploaded the regular WP files instead of WPMU and proceeded to install. All went well when I realized what I did. I then attempted to remove the WP files and upload WPMU to attempt the install. (I had cleared out my db at this point.)

The problem is that WPMU doesn't seem to want to create the tables like WP did. I'm using the same (and correct) credentials that I used for the regular WP install... but, still, no dice.

Up to this point, I've tried:
    - deleting all WPMU files and all files on the shared site (including htaccess.dist, wp-config, etc.)
    - deleting the db, db user and starting from scratch
    - double-checking the permissions for the folder from which I'm installing as well as the wp-content folder
    - and I've even tried installing FROM an entirely different Unix-based server TO an entirely different MySQL server (I'm using a reseller acct so I have access to a number of different servers.)

Nothing seems to work. After entering my DB credentials on the initial install page, I click save only to get a majoritively-blank page - just the WordPress MU logo and nothing else.

There seems to be a number of semi-related topics on the forum and even though I haven't seen a topic with a problem exactly like my own, I have tried every tip I've read thus far. That said, any idea why WP would be able to create tables but WPMU would not?

    Thanks all!

Check the db user - does it have ALL permissions on the db?
    Check your error logs.

Make sure the server space is absolutely clean of all the old files before trying a reinstall.

And on some shared hosts (as you've seen) getting it to install is a pain in the arse. Any way you can try a separate web account?

Okay, rookie mistake. I wasn't aware (should have been, but wasn't) that you needed the .htaccess file IN ADDITION TO the htaccess-dist file. My bad. Once I uploaded the .htaccess file, the installation process went just fine.

So, for anyone facing a similar issue, make sure you have both files.

The .htaccess file is created on install BY the htaccess.dist. Or at least it should be.

    The .dist means "distribution".

Ah... didn't appear to be doing that... at least not with my host. Got it all sorted out though. MU rocks; now playing with BuddyPress. ;) Thanks Andrea!
