Change to subdirectories, and plugins (5 posts)

OK, when I set MU up, I didn't spot that there was an option for subdomains and subdirectories, so it has defaulted to subdirectories.

My DNS doesn't support wildcards, which would mean setting every subdomain up manually.

    1) If I do this, do I just need to point the subdomain at the same place on the server as the main install? It looks like MU should handle this somehow, but I'm not sure how without the wildcards in place.

    2) If I wanted to change the install to subdirectories, where is the option in the PHP and what does it need changing to? I have only 1 blog on here at the moment, so I don't need to worry about content.

    3) If I do change, what does this mean for plugins? I've read somewhere on these forums that plugins don't work on subdirectory installs, but I'm not sure why.

    1. You can add each sub domain to the DNS manually (and to your system) and as you say, point each to the root of MU. MU will handle the rest for you.

    2. Easiest way with a single blog (if it doesn't have much on it) is to delete wp-config.php and drop the tables in the database and install from fresh.

    3. Not much, most plugins will work with either installation type.

    Thanks for the reply.

    1. Got that working.

Am now going to simply move the DNS to another host that supports wildcards, I think.

For the project I have in mind..... Because of scope, It would be far better for me to be able to use sub-directories over sub-domains.....

I've only used stand alone WP before....

    • I did a fresh install for WPMU, (gabrial.info is currently a hosted domain Path is in alert below)
    • WPMU was installed in it's root..... and chose sub-directories.....
    • uploaded the plugins folder (not mu-plugins)
    • installed from the admin C.panel....
    • But on hitting "visit the site" from the Admin Panel, after installing plugins,
    • I get a scrolling page of various breakage... ie

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/content/f/l/o/flopez4799/html/02-gabrial/wp-content/plugins/geo-mashup/geo-mashup-db.php:1165) in /home/content/f/l/o/flopez4799/html/02-gabrial/wp-login.php on line 255....

as I mentioned, gabrial is currently a hosted domain of mine, but WPMU is installed in it's root

Where am I making a mistake, or am I trying something "not so bright"?

It means the plugin barfed. Remove geo-mashup via ftp, see if the problem goes away.

Not every plugin works seamlessly on WPMU, and in this case that error usually means there's whitespace at the end of a file somewhere - probably the first file it mentions. If that's not it, then remove the plugin and see if it goes away.
