WordPress MU

Hello,

I am looking for installing WP MU mainly for leveraging the powerful features of BuddyPress.

A few questions:

1. Can WP MU be installed on a shared hosting like Dreamhost or Godaddy?

2. Can i safely assume that a standard wp theme will work on WP MU?

1. Can it? technically, yes. But if you're planning on a large site and with BP, you'd have to upgrade pretty quick. May as well get a small VPS to start with.

And more and more shared hosts do not allow MU on their regular accounts. Dreamhost, for example, won't allow MU on their shared accounts.

A follow up question if i might:

I see lots of people asking on installations on sub domains, i have seen a post in Andrea's site as well on that.

I wanted however to verify whether the following configuration if feasible:

- My blog running on WP.org on http://www.myblog.com
- My "social network" on WP MU + Buddy press running on friends.myblog.com

Can you advise whether this is a feasible/ non-risky config?

As long as you can get past the install, it's feasible yes. No other risks otherwise.

(assuming your server can handle it etc...)

And on a subdomain, any blogs created will be friends.myblog.com/blogname if you pick subfolders (probably better in this case) or blogname.friends.myblog.com if you use subdomains.
