WordPress MU

I have a new install of WP MU on a Ubuntu 9.04 install running Apache and mySQL.

Everytime I try to run the install, I am unable to connect to the DB. Just for testing purposes, I've created a DB called 'wordpress' with a user of 'cooper' and given the user full privileges to the DB.

I have tried 'localhost' as well as a host of directory paths to connect but had no success. I'm very familiar with WordPress but not with the Ubuntu setup.

Any help would be appreciated.
