First time upgrading MU (3 posts)

To upgrade WordPress MU 2.8.1 to 2.8.2 Donncha O Caoimh says "Grab the new release from the download page or upgrade automatically from within WordPress MU."

For reasons unknown to me I don't see an automatic upgrade option within my 2.8.1 dashboard (except for the Site Admin > Upgrade which I understand only does the database once the WPMU files are in place).

Turning then to manual upgrade, codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WPMU tells me:
    1. Backup WPMU
    did that
    2. use the ABC tool to back up as per WP
PROBLEM - I can't find documentation on what this is
    3. upload fresh copies of the new files
QUESTION - does this mean upload the zipped file and just unzip it and move the files into the correct places? Will it overwrite the old files? What about the BuddyPress files I've added, and worse, modified?
    4. click the upgrade button in the backend
Okay with this, as noted above.

Note, I'm using Bluehost with Cpanel and File Manager

    Thanx!

I'm confused by the ABC tool instructions as well. I have everything backed up and ready to go but stuck on the "ABC tool as per wp".

    Anyone?

I had no idea either, than I realized they meant the automatic backup plugin maybe?

If you've backed up all your files, and your database, then you can just go to step 3.

If you've modified buddypress files, they won't get overwritten unless you upgrade buddypress (which you'll need to do too). I hope you tracked your changes so you can reapply them. (unless you just made a custom theme - those should be okay).
