Excuse the question but can anyone tell me if these changes apply to the "nightly unstable" or to WPMU 1.0 rc1 or both.

It applies to the nightly version. rc1 was tagged around revision #601 so as you can see, there have been numerous updates since then.
Maybe it's time for another release candidate?

I am still one small step away from full production.
