Can't create blogs (10 posts)

Hello, recently set up WPMU, and Buddypress, upgrading last week when I heard there was a new July 2009 version of each (WPMU 2.8.1 and Buddypress 1.0.3). I'm customising it nicely, adding widgets and themes etc - so it works mostly.

But when I try to set up a new blog, with subdomain, it sends out the email to the right person, but the subdomain doesn't exist when they click through to it.

I'm hosted with 1and1.co.uk, business package - so I don't know if there are wildcard DNS issues (or, to be honest, what those are exactly) or if it's more down to the files I'm using.

Will I have to move host if I want to set up multiple blogs, or is there a way of disabling the subdomain creation, so a new blogger simply gets some space on the main domain?

    Thanks!

Its probably down to your DNS settings and your apache webserver settings for server aliases.

You need to make sure that these are set before you start looking at anything else.

That's exactly what WPMU uses to make subdomain blogs. :) So give support a holler and ask them to set it up.

Thanks, Andrea, Steve - they're pleading ignorance with regards to WPMU at the moment, but looking at the WPMU readme file, does the WPMU folder HAVE to sit in the root of my site for it to work properly? It currently sits in www.mydomain.com/subfolder/wpmu etc.

Not mecessarly, but you blogs (with subdomains) will be username.mydomain.com/subfolder/wpmu.

    Is that what you want?

Thanks Andrea - if that worked, that would be fine.

I've spoken with someone at 1and1.co.uk, who finally have told me that they won't offer wildcard DNS with ANY of their packages. I'm wondering if it's possible to change the settings so that instead of new blogs being created at "newblog.mydomain.com", it would create it at "mydomain.com/newblog"? That, I'm guessing, would solve the problem?

    Thanks again!

If you haven't created any blogs yet, just open up wp-config.php and change the vhost to "no".

And yes, that solves it. :)

Thanks Andrea - I HAVE created a couple of blogs, but couldn't post anything on them anyway because of the lack of wildcards as mentioned above. I've deleted them now from the dashboard, leaving only the main blog which has the same URL as the site itself - can this, too, be deleted?

I'm deleting them because I THINK I can then do your wp-config recommendation and reset vhost - is this possible? Or since I created blogs, do I have to reinstall everything?

    Thanks again.

    Yes. :)

If the extra blogs are gone, no need to worry about them.
