WPMU can't upload theme (4 posts)

    Heya,

My project is using WordPress MU which is run by my university, they have set up a side blog for me to customise.

I have a student account set up by my uni which I access by FTP <see FTP>, they have set me up with a mundus-theme folder which I upload my WP files.

I was told that in the mundus-theme folder I could put a theme files in there and that it would show up on my WP Dashboard, but it doesn't.

I uploaded a free template to see if the site/ connections work but nothing, and downloaded the standard WP software (not WPMU) <see wp_text> and uploading their template files to the uni mundus-theme folder. I tried to change the wp-config.php file to connect to the database, but wasn't given the db name.

(I have uploaded - tested - not working - deleted the files so that the folder is empty again to its original state.)

Each time I uploaded these things I went onto the clients WP admin account via the internet. In the dashboard I looked at the 'Appearance' section where themes are, inside the themes - there are a few options <see wp_page> and no new theme shows up. Which I was told that it would when I plonk the files in the mundus theme folder, the new theme would show up in the WP Dashboard.

I presume I would have to change a link somewhere in one of the WP files?

In my dashboard panel I only have 3 options <see wp_sidebar>. When I look at a tutorial video from 'In the WOODS' <see wp_theme> they have an 'Editor' option on the left and a list of .php files on the right which I don't have.

Does anyone you get this 'editors' panel show up in your WP admin/ dashboard page on any format of WP?

If you do then it must be something wrong with my privileges on my WPMU account (which uni set up) and also my uni account, not connecting to their db.

I don't know if my account somehow already is linked to the uni's database (gotta find that out), or if I've not done something right (i think this is the case) but its annoying.

Dunno if you have those extra options on your dashboard but it be good to know :D

    Many thanks

If you upload new themes to wp-content/themes, you must them go to Site Admin -> Themes and activate them before they show up under Appearance.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. Site Admin -> Themes I take it this option is in the WP dashboard? (Not in the FTP Server).

If so, then there is nothing showing in the 'Themes' panel <see wp_page> for me to activate anything other than the original default themes.

My new theme does not show up at all. I have however installed WP onto my own private web server & database and not on the uni's server, to test if if it works.

Which I set the wp-config.php to call my personal db, uploaded all files onto my server and added a downloaded free theme. Next I went into WP Admin > Appearance > and saw new options available to me (Editor, Add new theme?).

When I clicked the Theme option the new theme showed up and I can activate it. Wooh!!

So I gather now that my uni has disabled my privileges to be able to upload content via the WP Admin or the folder they set up on my FTP Sever.

Either way I'll be checking with the uni that all the account details are set correctly tomorrow. Many thanks for your suggestion :D

"So I gather now that my uni has disabled my privileges to be able to upload content via the WP Admin or the folder they set up on my FTP Sever."

    That could very well be.
