File ownership and permissions (1 post)

A server I manage is running Wordpress Mu 2.8.4a. The file permissions are correct, according to the install guide, however, if the file ownership is apache, I can do various editing and automatic upgrades, and if it's not, then I can't. The problem with files being owned by apache is they're liable to be overwritten using remote PUT's.

So my question is, I know I can disable PUT from within the apache server. However, if I do so I'll probably break something in Wordpress. So what's the best method to secure files and maintain upgrade functionality?

And most importantly, why isn't this automated in the installer?
