WordPress MU

   Here's the situation "You're logged in as a site administrator" and get a message "There is a new version of insert_plugin_or_theme_name_here available. View version #.#.# Details or upgrade automatically."

   I click update automatically and am taken to the connection for ftp.

   With a plugin update the proper information is submitted and I get the following message:

   Upgrade Plugin

   Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/insert-plugin-name-here.zip.

   Download failed. Could not create Temporary file

   Identical situation with Themes with exception to the from path.

   Is this a file permissions issue? If so, which need modified?

   It's a folder permissions issue.

   I changed permissions, temporarily, of the wp-content/plugins folder and no luck. I wasn't able to upgrade through the dashboard.

   I resorted to delete the plugin, itself, then upload the unzipped content manually via FTP client.

   after looking at the class-wp-upgrader.php I am pretty sure what it does is disable the plugin, delete the old content, unzip and create a temporary then write the actual files.

   All of this happens inside the folder for the individual plugin?

   Next time I'll change permissions for just the one plugin and see.

   Ok, I just confirmed.

   It's not the permissions on the individual theme/plugin folder.

   Any other suggestions?

   Ok, the problem is persistent.

   Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/login-lockdown.1.5.zip.

   Download failed. Could not create Temporary file

   The temporary file is created in the "working directory".

   I have tried full permissions on:
   / wp-content / plugins
   / wp-content / plugins / login-lockdown
   and on
   / wp-content / mu-plugins

   If it's file permissions which file needs modified?

   If not file permissions, what else could be the problem?

   Ownership of the folders, probably.

   Also, I know they're keeping track in the codex of hosts where the auto-upgrade is working - this is a related issues and exactly the same in MU.

   So, at some point if it still doesn't work, it may be your host. you always have the option to install plugins manually via ftp.
