I'm looking for a way to change the theme thats used when a new blog is created on my wordpress mu install. I've tried the blog-defaults.php plugin that I've seen floating around but installing / activating it didn't seem to do anything or create any new options on my dashboard. Is there something I need to edit manually in the .php file?

I've also tried renaming "mytheme" folder to "default" - but it seems to break the theme I'm trying to use.

With New Blog Defaults by DeannaS, it goes in the mu-plugins folder so nothing to activate. Then there is a new menu item added to the Site-Admin menu on the dashboard where the defaults can be set.

Dunno why you're having problems with the default folder name approach. You'd have to check the theme code to see if it's expecting a certain directory name or something.
