   I am still running 2.8.1 on my site and wish to upgrade it to 2.8.4a

   Normally I get link at the top telling my its time to update, but it hasn't appeared there for a while. I am also running buddypress so I am not sure if this has any effect.

   I would prefer an automatic upgrade over a manual one.

   When I run the Site Admin/Upgrade it appears to upgrade the blogs but on my dashboard it still reports that I am using 2.8.1

   I think that you'll find there was a bug so you'll need to fix it or do a manual upgrade.

   There was a bug in the auto-upgrade for that version, and there's a few (dozen) threads about it here in the forums with the fix.
