RackSpace Installation - No Go (17 posts)

Has anyone successfully installed WPmu on a domain hosted on a RackSpace server?

    Plesk

I'm dead in the water at the moment. Installs and works right out of the box on my 'test' domain...

But after installation all I get is a blank page at the RackSpace domain.

    Any ideas?

    D.

Are you using virtual hosts and are they set up on the server? All I can think of at the moment.

Virtual Hosts are set up on the server.

But, it is a PLESK server. I think this is where the problem lies in finding the particular TWEAKS peculiar to PLESK to make WP mu work out of the box.

Anybody get a successful mu install with Plesk??

Might help if you tell us where you're having the issue with the install. :)

Sort of like "My car is broken and it's in another state. Can you fix it?"

This might help with providing us some information.

Well, Denis DeBernardy is the MAN who initially installed WPmu here...

    http://www.bloglanding.com

RIGHT after we (he and I) had it working perfectly on several other domains with different hosts.

We're working on getting his Semio theme working with WPmu - And the final working system will be on set up on that domain above (which is hosted by RackSpace and Plesk system)

So I highly suspect that it's something that has not been properly set in Plesk server side, since we've done exactly as we've done with previous successful installs on OTHER servers NOT running Plesk.

After running WPmu install here, there is just a blank page.

And it looks to me like the database and WPmu are not able to communicate.

I see an ERROR when looking more deeply into the database - something about "additional features for working with linked tables deactivated".

I've checked wp_blogs and wp_site database tables and the domain setting are matched to the main db info.

Recent stuff in the error log... I hope it's ok to post this info.

I really have no idea who Denis DeBernardy is and don't see that affects us trying to fix your setup. I know 5 of the board of directors of Google but that doesn't matter here.

I noticed though that you're listing plugins in your errors. I thought you were trying to setup a new install.

Are you just tranferring over a setup that worked? Would be worth it to just try and do a plain install. Denis can try and get his theme working with it after that.

I would also suspect that it is the plesk server (I hate them myself) screwing things up. I tried putting an index.php at the end of your URL and it tried to force me to save the file.

Drmike... my apologies. I'm new to THIS forum and assumed that Denis would have been a known quantity here because of his Semio Logic theme and likely WP contributions. But I do FEEL your sarcasm (or is it rudeness?), and find it counter-productive.

He did transfer over a setup that worked already, initially. But then tore it all out including the database and started over with a plain mu install. Those indications of plugins (in error log) are PREVIOUS to his removing everything and starting with a plain install.

The mu install just won't complete... well, all the files install but the site then produces a blank page after initializing.

And yes andrea r, I suspect it's a quirk with Plesk for a Special setting needed to work with WPmu - and it's NOT been set properly yet because no one knows it's supposed to be. I'm just trying to drill down to find it.

It's something having to do with the database and Mu speaking to each other (or NOT speaking to each other, more precisely)

I'm at a bit of a handicap as to WHAT's been done so far, as this problem has just landed on my plate this morning. And although I've done zillions of WP installs, I've yet to install WPmu. This will be my first - and on a Plesk server to boot.

I'm trying to get tech support at RackSpace to help from their side and now they've escalated this to a SENIOR support person and I'm waiting.

I JUST thought someone here may have done a successful mu install on a Plesk server and would have a few pointers and things to watch out for. I've found that if I at least know the AREA for tech support to focus on for THEIR server setting and checks, it often really cuts to the chase.

Although this IS the Mu support forum - I AM truly sorry for my Mu noobiness. Thanks very much for the help, people.

I've installed MoveableType on a Plesk server, and it was... "interesting" to say the least, but it was a couple years ago.
What's it like installing a regular version of Wordpress on a Plesk server? It may be worth it to try that just to see what Plesk does.

"And it looks to me like the database and WPmu are not able to communicate.

I see an ERROR when looking more deeply into the database - something about "additional features for working with linked tables deactivated". "

Then that would totally be on the hosts end and how they get databes to communicate with applications.

Andrea, I've installed a ton of 'regular' WP installs on this server and others in this account - All Plesk. All went smoothly and effortlessly.

YES... it's the database and WPmu NOT communicating that's the problem. AND it IS something that the host must set on their end. It's just either getting them to drill into it and figure out what that is, OR admit that it IS on their end. LOL.

Anyway, wondering if any of you can recommend a hosting service that you KNOW supports and works well with wp mu? Just in case...

    Thanks much

    Deb

    Working now.

Rackspace 'forgot' to restart Apache after editing php.ini and a few other settings.

    Good grief... But thank goodness.

And thanks for your help. MUCH appreciated.

For future reference, what settings/edits were required of Rackspace to get the server prepped for WPMU? I'm sure you won't be the last to use them as a host.

I'll post the the RackSpace settings, tweaks, and edits here - as soon as I get them ALL put together in one file. They are spread around between RackSpace, the WP theme creator, and myself ;-)

But a settings 'cheat sheet' will be sweet for future installs on other RackSpace servers.

I would be very interested in such a cheat sheet for WP MU installation on Plesk/Rackspace, as I'm about to go through just that process!

We had no problem installing the individual user version (for different purpose).

    Thanks in advance,
    A :)
